Jeff Bezos is worth over $100 billion after Amazon's Black Friday rally

Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos now has a 12-digit fortune, according to an estimate by Bloomberg.

Bezos's net worth surpassed $100 billion on Friday, Bloomberg reported. Amazon shares hit a record on Black Friday — one of the year's busiest shopping days— joining a broader stock market rally.

Bezos, the world's richest man, owns about 78.9 million shares of Amazon, according to a Nov. 14 filing. That stake alone is worth more than $93.5 billion as of Friday's closing price of $1,186 a share.

Amazon is not his only business venture. Bezos also invests in start-ups, and owns The Washington Post and space company Blue Origin. These companies can be difficult to value, but Forbes still puts Bezos's fortune at $99.6 billion.

Bezos is followed on the list of wealthiest people by Bill Gates and Warren Buffett. They've both already allocated significant chunks of their fortunes to philanthropy, a goal that Bezos is also exploring.

You know, after the first $2 or 3 Billion, the rest doesn't make that much of a difference.

it does if you give it away

He'd have to sell off his shares to do that and lose control of the company.

He only owns 17% of the company as it is.

Jeff Bezos literally can't sell his Amazon shares fast enough for him to ever actually see his net worth decrease. Even selling $1 billion of Amazon stock yearly (to fund his private rocket venture) makes no dent whatsoever.

He could just delete a billion dollars a year from the database and his wealth would still increase.

Why do you think he is limited to $1B per year?

A bit of simplification but...

If you're in control of a large public company, it's tough to sell stock without being accused of some form of insider trading (even if you sell during open trading windows). You can get around this by declaring a sales schedule years in advance (e.g. "on such and such date, no matter what, I'm going to sell 1mm units of stock"). That's what Bezos is doing.

You also don't want to liquidate too many shares at once, since that can tank your stock price. That's bad for not only Bezos and outside investors, but his white-collar employees (e.g. engineers, account managers, product managers, marketers, executives, etc...); they receive a large amount of compensation in stock-form.

Plenty of CEOs unload their stock at more than $1b per year.

[–]threeMileLongIsland [score hidden] 1 hour ago
I wouldn't say plenty. There aren't many CEOs that own that much stock in their own companies (highly unusual, except for founders/CEOs who have been with the company through the early growth stages).

Anyways, he could sell more if he wanted to; he'd just have to announce a new stock sale schedule. He probably still expects the stock to keep going up, hence he's remains heavily invested in the company. If he needs a lot of cash for something (say investing in Blue Origin), it probably makes more sense for him to take out cheap debt against his current stock holdings (this is what Larry Ellison does).

I don't know if that's a real limit or just what he's decided to invest

Yes. You can buy some pretty decent small companies for a few billion.

Meanwhile amazon dodge tax as a business model and pay their staff poverty wages.

Amazon has a distribution center in my area paying 17.00 an hour. Almost higher than what I was getting paid for a skilled trade per hour minus my bonuses.

Because Amazon is a global mongul. Those companies pale in comparison to Amazon.

I've known many people that have worked for Amazon in various capacities. Two good friends were software engineers that were paid very well (at least competitively with Microsoft). Another friend worked in one of their fulfillment centers for a year just doing the normal grunt work of putting orders in bins and boxing, etc. He made something like $14/hr which was more than me as a junior sysadmin at a local ISP in the same town. I don't think anyone was making "poverty" wages and certainly not worse than any other unskilled warehouse worker in the region

[–]skilliard7 [score hidden] 1 minute ago
I disagree about poverty wages. People simply working in Warehouses are making $16/hr for a job that doesn't require any formal training. If you actually get effort to learn a marketable skill, you make 6 figures creating software. How is that "poverty wages"?

[–]hydec 3 points 4 hours ago
It pays it staff whose jobs could be replaced by anyone with a middleschool diploma or a robot what they are WORTH for their labor. They dont pay their staticians or programmers minimum wage.

[–]theresponsible -3 points 4 hours ago
    pay their staff poverty wages.

no one is forcing those people to work for poverty wages. The law sets the minimum. The market determines the rest. Raise minimum wage if you want workers to get paid more. Amazon isn't doing anything wrong in the slightest. Do you pay more for goods out of the goodness of your hearts or do you take the agreed upon price at the shelf? Why should Amazon pay extra if people are lining up to work at that wage? If the wage is "poverty" level that is an issue for the government, not Amazon.

I dont make them wait 30 minutes unpaid for security checks or give them a series of unmeetable targets to get as much as possible out of them

Amazon like UBER, treats employees like s***.

It can afford to treat its employees better.

Unfortunately we can want that and expect it to happen all we want, and it wont because human nature/self-interested rational action. This is why we have a government - to create laws and try to make things fair and reasonable.

This is what the right side of politics do not seem to understand and they'd probably just call me a communist or something
