Manufacturing unemployment is at a record low
Myles Udland Markets Reporter, Yahoo Finance•December 9, 2017
The unemployment rate in the U.S. is currently at 4.1%, its lowest level since December 2000.
But if you’re in the manufacturing industry, you’ve never seen an unemployment rate lower. In November, the unemployment rate in the manufacturing industry fell to 2.6%, the lowest on record for the series, which dates back to January 2000.
Jed Kolko, an economist at job site Indeed, notes that in 2017 manufacturing employment has grown 1.5% from last year, right around the same pace at overall economic growth. In 2016, manufacturing employment declined.
Since 2000, however, overall employment in manufacturing has declined about 25%, falling from around 17 million at the beginning of the century to around 13 million today. Workers leaving the industry or the workforce altogether, and therefore no longer counting as unemployed manufacturing workers, has no doubt contributed to some of this decline.
This new low for manufacturing unemployment, however, comes during a year in which President Donald Trump has repeatedly harped on his desire to kickstart the sector.
And amid a year that has seen the stock market soar to record highs and the economy enjoy some of its strongest overall growth in years, the administration will no doubt see this data point as affirmation of their economic initiatives boosting the manufacturing industry.
Economists at UBS noted that most of the overall gains in manufacturing employment came in the fabricated metals and machinery industries, which are benefitting from an energy-led boost in overall capital investment from businesses. After declining alongside the 2015 plunge in oil prices, business investment has surged over the last couple of quarters.
But Friday’s report largely indicates that in contrast to the last economic expansion, the U.S. manufacturing base is growing, or as Joe Quinlan, chief market strategist at U.S. Trust, wrote in a note this week, “the death of American manufacturing has been greatly exaggerated.”

Hey history 101, it's called optimism. Once the dark cloud from Obanana left and Trump won, we knew that he would start rolling back a lot of stifling legislation. That's what Trump did. He also promised tax cuts and a cut in corporate taxes. Here in SE WI he helped convince FoxConn to locate here and bring 13,000 jobs. Need I go on because I can. A lot of it is the optimism that Trump is working hard to turn this economy around. If you believe what the lib-turd media is spewing then you would've missed the BEAUTIFUL stock run up this year. Yes, my portfolio is kicking butt. It's the economy that's going to keep Trump rolling and NOT you small minded Obama-turds.

@MAXTHEKATT You can thank the Bush recession dumbazz. You're either high, stupid or both.
Between 2009 and 2016, GDP growth reached at or above 3% on a quarterly basis about eight times under Obama..
Obama handed Trump an economy that was close to what economists consider full employment. The unemployment rate on Inauguration Day was 4.8%, and it has fallen since then, to 4.4% in June.
The average of 162,000 net new jobs a month so far this year is off last year’s figure of 187,000.
The highest monthly job gain under Trump -- 232,000 -- was exceeded in 28 separate months on Obama’s watch.
job gains under Trump were actually lower than each of the last six years of February-to-August job gains for Obama, except for one year -- 2012.
At the current pace, the U.S. would add about 1.9 million jobs in 2017. It would be the first time since 2010 the figure was below 2 million.
That would continue a downward trend since the economy added nearly 3 million net new jobs — an average of 250,000 a month — in 2014 in THE BEST YEAR OF LABOR MARKET GROWTH SINCE THE LATE 1990s.
When President Obama took office on Jan. 20, 2009, the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) slumped to 7,949.09, the lowest inaugural performance for the Dow since its creation
"The Dow Jones Industrial Average's performance [under Obama] of 120.6% ranks as the sixth best of any US President since 1900
Obama administration has overseen an impressive upswing in the stock market. As of the end of Obama's term on January 20, 2017, the Dow Jones had more than recovered from its January 2009 slump, resting nicely at 19,732.40 for the day, more than double what it was on inauguration day.

@MAXTHEKATT your layoff had nothing to do with President Obama. You can thank President Bush for that. The economy grew from an absolute low in 2008 until now. This is not all thanks to Mr. Trump. President Obama was there for 8 years and is responsible for some of that booming economy. Of the 103 months of the current bull market, only 11 are attributable to Mr. Trump, the rest are President Obama. In his second term, the Dow went from 12,720 to 19,732.
