Egyptian Parliament To Enact Law To Criminalise Atheism

The Committee on Religion in the Egyptian Parliament has disclosed plans to pass into law, a bill that makes atheism a criminal offence in the North African nation.

Current Egyptian law says atheists can be prosecuted for expressing their disbelief in public but the committee’s proposal would go further and criminalise disbelief itself.

It would be recalled that in 2014, little more than a week after Abdel-Fattah el-Sisi was sworn in as Egypt’s President, the government announced that it was preparing a national plan to crush every form atheism.

A few months later Al-Shabab, a government-linked newspaper, stated that atheists were “the country’s second enemy after the Muslim Brotherhood” and quoted a psychologist saying that “atheism leads to mental imbalances and paranoia”.

As part of its effort to suppress the Muslim Brotherhood the Sisi regime began promoting a version of Islam that is often characterised as “moderate” – though “militantly mainstream” might be a better term.

Saudi Arabia adopted a similar position in 2014 when “promotion of atheist thought” became officially classified as an act of terrorism.

Misfer: Did you hear that they criminalized Athiesm?

Ahmed: I don't believe it.

Police: Get him!

Since he fucked the Muslim Brotherhood over, Sisi needs to score some brownie points with Islamists. Steamrolling atheists, who don’t have a lot of political power, is the easiest way.

The Jews all left. Before, they used to be a big part of Alexandria. One less group to blame I guess!

because Egypt has so many problems internally it needs someone to blame

isn't that what Hitler did?

Ahmadinejad, Netanyahu, Trump... the list is nearly endless.

I can't understand how it can be criminal to not believe something. Either you believe or you don't, you can't just "try harder"... If someone tried to force me that (just as an analogy to take something no one believes in), let's say unicorns are real, I can't make myself believe they're real.

Isn't half the point of faith that you're dedicating yourself freely and honestly to your God? If you only pretend because of threats doesn't that take away the sanctity of it? Does Muslims want non-believers to "fake" belief, to go to their mosques without wanting to?

I don't see how this benefit Muslims. I wouldn't want people playing pretend next to me if I was praying, but that's what's going to happen if this is enacted.

It's less about faith, and more about control

The quote is often credited to Seneca the younger, but it's probably not his:

Religion is regarded by the commoner as true, by the philosopher as false, and by the ruler as useful.

This statement pretty much sums all religions. Hope is a damn powerful word. Hope for an afterlife. Hope for a meaning. Hope for a better life out of poverty.

An easy way of weeding out troublemakers: tell them to do something ridiculous.

Technically they dont care of you are a christian. You just need to follow one of the 3 recognised religions.

So it is okay to say "Your god is a lie, mine is correct" But saying "Your god is a lie, just like every other god is a lie" is illegal.

They're the same God. You'd be challenging their interpretation of God, not God itself.

[–]GreyGonzales 6 points 5 hours ago
It may be the same God but if you're Jewish or Christian and not Muslim aren't you basically saying that the Qur'an is fake and Muhammad is a fraud. That seems just as insulting as not believing in any of it at that point. Same as Jews look at the New Testament. Or all of them look at The Book of Mormon.

These simple questions illustrate how intellectually bankrupt the islamist worldview is.

If you've never read George Orwell's 1984, I highly recommend it. It is about a totalitarian government in control of information in a dystopian London. It was written in 1948, and feels more relevant now than ever.

It's a shame people still actively spreading religions in 21st century.

Systematic abuse and discrimination for any reason will cause mental instability including paranoia.

So they are paranoid about atheists being paranoid. The sheer hypocrisy

While I don't think violence can ultimately solve this issue, what else can you really do with the current violent extremists and islamists. Obviously education is the key, but it doesn't help much if there are people that will literally saw your head off if you don't conform to their extreme beliefs.

Religious extremism should be classified as a mental disorder. These nutty fucking countries are giant asylums.

I don't want to generalize and hate on all Egyptians, but Egypt is the shittiest country I've ever been to. Luckily I'm male, but as a woman you can barely save yourself from constant unwanted male advances/borderline sexual assault there. 0/10 would recommend for vacation.

Lived in Cairo for 16 years. Generally you're right but it's genuinely enjoyable in places like Sharm El Sheikh and Hurghada since a large majority there are from abroad and it's on the coast. The Sphinx and Pyramids are worth seeing but the locals really make it an awful experience with constant harassment and tourist scams.

I've heard horror stories regarding Cairo and nearby areas. But some friends that went to the Red Sea liked it.

Such a shame though, egypt does have a very rich history and is a beautiful country. Too bad the government has to go and fuck it up.

Scary how the world seems to be getting worse in so many ways. There's no checks and balances anymore as the bad guys use every trick in the book to further their ends while the good guys keep trying to be the "better man" and keep getting steamrolled.
