Both China and Japan are beautiful countries. But personally, if I can pick only one, I will pick China.
Japan is a very modern country, yet we can still see ancient temples, castles, shrines and go to Osaka for the food which are unforgetable.
One thing that China cannot beat was this:
I was a big fan of the gunpla. Still is, sometimes.
On the other hand, China is much bigger geographically. I do not think we can really explore and enjoy China in 30 days. And that is by excluding HK and Macau. Therefore, saying ‘visit China’ is a bit incorrect, just like saying ‘visit the US’ is not really correct. US is also so big that people should say ‘visit NY’, ‘visit Vegas’, ‘visit SF’, etc.
China is also super modern, yet we can also see the world famous ancient side of China. The difference with Japan is that some of the sceneries in China can be really breathtaking. Some are literally breathtaking like the Great Wall, long walk, requires a lot of breath. :)
Some of the sceneries are really magical. You should be there to really feel it.
As for the food, once I meet a western chef who claimed in the world there are only two types of cuisine: French and Chinese.
Also, going to China is much cheaper compared to travelling in Japan.
If you only have short vacation, Japan wins. But if you have more than one week, China wins. If you have only one week and want to go China, pick Beijing and the surroundings. One week should enough.
If you want to sample life in a futuristic city, go to Shanghai.
And other marvelous city, Chongqing.
If you have gone to Japan then to China, then the visit to Japan will feel like a small part of travelling in China.
A friend once told me that before you die, you must go to Brazil. Now, I can tell him: before you die, you should go to China.

Well, I did not think this answer would convince me of the merits of going to China over Japan (I love Japan), but you’ve convinced me. I do think Japan wins even if a visit is longer than a week, but yeah, if you have a few weeks or longer, China would probably win just by expansiveness. Japan is amazing. I’ve been to HK and Macau but nowhere else in China yet. I plan to.

YES! And U haven’t talked about the western part yet comprises the Taklamakan, Gobi and another desert. The ppl, the culture etc are so diff from the Eastern side.

I agree with Kenzo [that sounds like a JPNese name.]
Japan copied many things from China. Even modern JPNese people came from China during the Qin Dynasty.

Exactly, China is so huge that the diversity will amaze anyone who come to it.

China’s foods suck for me(especially in inner China like Sichuan or Xinjiang).
But China is way, way better on travelling agendas. Totally worth the visit

Personally, I would rather visit China. I am studying Mandarin and want to practice, and I am of Chinese descent so I would like to learn more about the motherland.
That said…
I’m fortunate to have visited both countries. And for the average Western person given this choice, I would recommend Japan.
I think Japan is more accessible to Westerners. Overall it looks cleaner. (E.g. Japan has the best public toilets ever. Most public toilets in China are squat toilets). The food is safer. You don’t need a visa (China requires a tourist visa). The fashion is better. People overall are quite polite…the Chinese aren’t necessarily rude, but the Japanese have these insane social rules that ensure they’re mild-mannered and polite.
Japan is the safer choice. So why should you visit China instead?

Young Chinese people (in the cities) speak decent English. If you’re lost and struggling, someone can help. In Japan, my experience is that very few people speak it. Even if they understand it, they can’t produce it. Plus, they might be reluctant to talk in fear of making mistakes
Worldfamous tourist destinations. If it’s important to you to visit these kinds of places, or you want your family to know about what the heck you saw, China’s your place. Almost everyone knows about the Great Wall, the Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square, Xi’an Terracotta Army, Beijing, Shanghai. Japan has Mount Fuji, Tokyo, Kinkakuji, Hiroshima memorial.China is an adventure. Driving is terrifying and chaotic; even when you aren’t behind the wheel. There’s a great variety of teas and foods from the different regions. The people seem warm and welcoming, and won’t be afraid to engage with you. In Japan, people rarely talk to strangers and there’s a general “don’t be rude by disturbing the peace” vibe China is cheaper Live (seafood) markets, and bartering. Nothing like having a live clam spit at you! This is mostly in the countryside though.
Chose Japan for comfort/familiarity and China for the adventure. Can’t go too wrong either way :-0

At first glance at this question was instinct was to say Japan!
But with more considering the clear answer became China, because geographically Japan is roughly the size of California and I totally love California as Japan.
However China is the size of the entire United States, so its a no-brainer really.
So much much more to do and see in China!

Tang W yun, British-born Chinese
For me, it’s hard to pick one out of those two; both of them are equally great countries to visit. If you don’t mind me picking two.
>>>>Firstly, CHINA
My native ancestors and relatives were originally Hong Kong and very south-east part of China. Since China is a third (or arguably fourth) largest country in the world after Russia, Canada and USA, it takes more than my life time to explore every parts of the country. Beside Hong Kong, I have only been three provinces in China for my whole life: Beijing (2001), and Henan and Shaanxi (2012 on the same trip). All the trips in China I went were on guided tour with my relatives. As much as I prefer solo travel, but nevertheless, those were interesting trips.
Since China is a huge country, there are many different cultural customs every parts of China - each has their own dialect, cuisine, religions etc. As most of my relatives from Hong Kong, we mainly speak Cantonese. Normally we eat steamed or shallow-fried fish, rice is the predominantly food at home or restaurants, Cantonese-style roasted duck and crispy belly port (Both are my favourites) and dim-sum. My favourite dim-sums are shallow-fried Wor-Tip (Hong Kong variant of gyoza dumpling), deep-fried wont-ton or anything shallow or deep-friend starters.
Our home cooking methods are heavily based on steaming and stir-frying, but some occasions, shallow frying, double steaming, braising and deep frying.
I heard a friend of mine from Beijing, happened to be an international student, and took me to the local Beijing-style cuisine restaurant with his friends. It has been a long time since the last time I went to Beijing, I was in my early teens back then, so I couldn’t remember what Beijing cuisine was like is. All I remember is crispy duck skin on pancake. My first taste of Beijing’s cuisine – or any food from parts of China – are all foreign to me. In further northeast of China, Heilongjiang Province, their cuisine is more Russian influence, since it near the Russian border and stronger Russian cultural influences.
I think I talk too much about my native origin and my local cuisine. Anyway, I will have a chance to visit every parts of China. My area of interest in China are:
Heilongjiang Province/
Because of the Russian influence, it raised my interest to visit these place./
St. Sophia Cathedral in Harbin. Now a museum./
Winter ice festival. Only happens during the winter.
Xinjiang Province/
The westernmost province in China. I have been yearning for many years to visit these places like this. One of the reasons I’m interested because it was the most well-known route of the historical Silk Road, the ancient trade route, used for several centuries between 120BC – 1450s AD as an economical trade. Furthermore, it was used as cultural trade among the civilisations along its route. During that period, numerous traders of different nationalities included the Arabs, Armenians, Bactrians, Chinese, Georgians, Greeks, Jews, Indians, Persians, Romans, Somalis, Syrians, Turkmens and Sogdians (Ancient Iranians).
This region home to a number of mixed diversities, including the Uighurs, Kazakhs, Tajiks, Hui, Mongols, Uzbeks and Russians. While Han Chinese remains the majority in the north of the province, western parts remain dominant by minority culture. Islam is observed by 60% of Xinjiang’s population – mainly by minorities. Nevertheless, it has bigger Sunni Islam influence if visitors are interested in Islamic cultural custom in China. This is a place to visit.

If you interested in Islamic culture. Xinjiang is one of the provinces where Islam is very significant, despite China has less than 2% of its population observe Islam.
There are numerous of old tradition Uighur achitectures (eg. third image), but sadly, it’s slowly phasing out.
5. Traditional Uighuer house (As you can see, Uighur house is heavily influence by Islam culture)/
6. Great Mosque of Kuche, Xinjiang/

In conclusion, Xinjiang Province is one of the most interesting place I wanted to go. The culture is very different to my region. Xinjiang is mainly desert with some mountains - such a beuatiful place. The more I dig research about Xinjiang, the more beuatiful it is.
Tibetan Plataeu
It has some exotic heavenly scenery snow-capped highlands and mountains filled with ancient Tibetan culture. Tibet is a very mysterious place, even for Chinese people and I as well. When I think or hear the mentioning of Tibet, first few things came to my mind: Potala Palace, Tibetan Monks, Tibetan Buddhism and very high-altitude in peaceful heaven.
It takes a very strong dedication to reach Tibet from the low grounds. Visitors needs to be very physically, mentally and emotionally fit to travel to Tibet since it’s a very high-altitude (low oxygen level) place as altitiude sickness do occur. Altitude sickness is potentially fatal and can only be cured by descending to lower altitude immediately or oxygen supplies. I have a friend of mine (Chinese) who went there some years ago, he passed out and he was saved by the group of local friendly Tibetans who let accomodated him. Overall, he enjoyed several weeks stay in Tibet.
As I seen the photos of Tibet, there are amazingly beautiful. I’ll pinpoint the best place.
1.Potala Palace. First thing always came to my mind is this. Beautiful place inside. Unfortunately, no photos are allowed anywhere inside; again, visitors are allowed upto one hour upon entry and visitors can’t stop anywhere inside the premises.
2. Jokhang Temple. Jokhang means ‘House of Buddha’ and Tibetans regarded as the most sacred and important temple in Tibet. First built in 647AD with architectural style of Han Chinese, Tibetan, India and Nepal.
