Japan had 2 atomic bombs dropped on it at the end of WWII - many people involved couldn’t live with themselves afterwards. Millions of innocent people were killed, and millions more suffered for decades afterwards. It’s also unclear that this was even necessary. My understanding is that Japan was on the brink of surrendering, making this act a totally unnecessary cruelty, that the real reason was that the military/government rushed in to drop the bombs because they wanted a real live test on their latest weapon while they still had a chance - the European war being already over.

I would disagree with Japan being on the brink of surrendering. They didn’t even surrender after the second bomb let alone the first. It took the combined devastation of both a-bombs (which were not dropped at the same time by the way) and the Soviet Union declaring war. Even then, the Emperor of Japan had to declare Japan’s surrender in secrecy because it was unpopular.
