Which is a better place to live permanently, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, or Singapore?

Been to all 4, born in Singapore and is staying in Mainland China Guangzhou currently.
I have to clarify that these are personal views and is not an attempt to put down any place in particular.
I think Taiwan is a mess now, too much politics and power play going on that does not benefit the common people, businesses and professionals alike. Economy is rather stagnant. Reasonably friendly people, but comparatively now, standard of living is not as good as what I’m getting in Guangzhou. Unless there aresome major changes to policy, definitely not on my list.
Hongkong is a question mark to me. Economy is still reasonably strong, but I don’t see it going very far in the near future. Maybe as a professional. People are not that friendly. It might be the fact that I’m just not used to the Hong Kong social culture, but I sometimes feel that they are too rude and aloof. I also don’t see so many smiling faces around….compared to 10 years ago. Spiritually they seem lost. Standard of living is also mixed. Expensive place to be in but you don’t really get the bang for your buck. Living space tends to be small and infrasturture is aged. I’ll put it as my 3rd choice if I have to rank it..
Singapore is my hometown. I grew up there. I’m FAMILIAR with it. Familarity makes life easy. People are friendly because I’m familiar with it. But I can sense the economy going into a technical recession regardless of what the official reports are saying. People are looking for opportunities because they feel stress. Cost are rising but income is stagnant. My fellow counteymen are beginning to open up to foreigners again after a few years of anti-foreigners mentality. Opening up but slowly, many still trying to figure out why we need foreigners in Small Singapore to thrive. Some are saying we lack strong and wise leadership and thus the reason why we are losing out in the region, I think the main reason is still the lack of knowledge in international or at least regional economics by the common people. We are afterall runned by a government that acts by the will of most of our citizens. Citizens got to be wise enough to accept good policies that benefits all in the long term instead of trying to find shortcuts to solving current problems. Still, it’s my home and I will go back to SG, because of familarity.
Mainland China is my home now. I still see a lot of growth and potential here. I’m getting older and needs to consider about retirement. It would not be difficult to retire here. I just need to move away from Guangzhou to a less expensive place if I find it too expensive. China is where I found choices. I have lived on RMB 20 a day here for 5 months before and I can choose to spend more when I want a better standard of living. Both are acceptable when you compare cost to standard of living. To me, these are choices I can make on my own free will. True freedom. In the other 3 places including Singapore, I can’t find such freedom, options are limited. I’m forced to spend even when I know I can do with less. And with such freedom around, real career and business opportunities become available to everyone. So China is currently my first choice. A place where I can choose to both retire when I want to and work hard for the best I want.

it really dpds on ur purpose in a foreign land. Looking for a job vs setting up a business there vs expanding your business there. I was there previously due to a job deployment.
cost of living. This is within your control. U can decide how much u wish to spend based on your lifestyle choices

Hi, I was on M visa which allows me a 3 months stay and then change to Q2 visa and within 2 weeks to Resident Permit which allows me to stay for up to a year each time, my resident permit has been extended over time to 3 years stay currently..based on good behaviour I think? Lol. But Q2 is based on the fact that I have a chinese wife so might not be applicable to you. With regards to choices, I don’t think our $3 per bowl of noodle justify as a choice. Other considerations should be taken in. Let me explain.
When I first came to China, I was fresh out from a divorce, left with only SGD3000 in cash after all the settlement. I first went to Foshan (in and out for 5months), then to Shanghai(too expensive was there for 2months and left), then to Tianjin(3months) and then to Dalian. By the time I went to Dalian, I was only managing to earn about RMB2000 a month through export trade.
I realised that to make things work, I have to be frugal. No more hotels, instead I managed to get another sponsor for my M visa for a longer stay to 6months (this option no longer available) and rented a room for only RMB 160 a month sharing with 3 others.
The whole unit house 9pax. The only living area I would consider my own would be my bed and a simple wardrobe. I work from my laptop on my bed. Meals everyday are simple, and I cook my own meals most of the time buying fresh vegetables and some meat from the street market nearby everyday. Food cost is only about RMB 70 per week.
The only other essential I need was a phoneline. Cost me RMB 50 per month to maintain it. I would also travel sometimes using the local tram and bus services at RMB 1 per trip. I survived 3 months in this manner, saving up captial and lowering my daily cost before I found a break in trading sea cucumber to Japan from Dalian.
My first deal got me RMB35000 in profit. But I continued to stay at the place because I found it to be a good place to understand local culture and to understand how things work in China from a local point of view. But I did begun to spend more on better food and would occasionally treat some of the roommates for a drink and BBQ at the roadside stalls at night. After 9months and about 200k RMB in profits, I rented an apartment myself as a treat to myself but realised that I can actually do with less if I want to.
So I agree that actual staying, living and starting a business here all by yourself would be a different thing all together, because that’s how the local entrupreners starts out and I learn from their ways which I’m glad I did.
Anyway, I left Dalian in 2015 for Guangzhou as I started to dabble in E-commerce and found my niche there. In Guangzhou, it is definitely more expensive but still cheaper than in SG. My choice of business requires me to be here, and now I can say that I can afford this lifestyle without worries. And if I fail due to circumstances I cannot control, I can always go some place in China where I can afford to start over at a much lower cost.
As for the incident which you encountered about the man scolding another man, yes I do find it common/uncommon. It will depend on where you are in China. Anyway, such ethnics are normaly frown upon by others, especially the younger generation who ironically are more infused with confucius values than the older generation. The reason for this is rather obvious, the older generation went through the cultural revolution where most of the traditional values and morals were trashed. It was about 10years after Deng opening up reform that such values are again indoctrinated into the school system. The beginning concepts of the opening up and refrom policy is also somewhat misguided and did cause a huge amount of the population to become materialistic, thus the corruption and hustling but of course such policies were adjusted over the years and currently most of the general population is still having good moral values. Mr. Xi also came down hard on corruption over the last 5 years, and it is wonderous how a shaming society like China helped to move such policies quickly.
Feel free to come over and stay for a while to understand local culture and policies better before you make the move. I think this is quite important. In fact more important than having enough capital to do a business here.

I’m Indian, speak (Mandarin), read and write Chinese and have lived in Singapore for 8 years, Mainland China for 7, HK for 3 and Taiwan for 2 years and am married to a Taiwanese lady. I am currently back in Shanghai for my 4th stint of living on the mainland and here’s what I think.
Taiwan: Inexpensive, clean, friendly. However, economic opportunities are limited and when I worked there I was at about 1/3 of what I used to earn in China, so it might be a good place to retire rich but not for your working years. Also not an international place, not even in Taipei City.
HK: Very international. Great mix of urban and outdoors opportunities - hiking, beaches, hang-gliding etc. However, it is expensive, not very friendly and while some sectors are healthy and have a lot of opportunities (finance, mostly) the rest are all very small now that HK is no longer the place where China companies are run from.
Singapore: Has changed a lot in the last couple of decades. It’s now become very international, expensive and highbrow, so it’s lost a lot of the simple charm and pleasures of some years ago. People (local Singaporeans, I mean) can be really charming and friendly , the variety and authenticity of food is amazing and it could be a nice place to live in long term if you’ve got a good job and live within your means, but I also know a lot of people who live beyond their means and that’s a surprisingly real danger in this city. Also, the weather sucks.
Mainland China: Lots of opportunities, things can be as expensive or as cheap as you want, big cities are clean (ish) and efficient and people are very very friendly if you speak even a little Mandarin. Also, contrary to popular belief, there is a great degree of personal freedom, it’s relatively easy to set up a business here and it’s extremely safe. I wouldn’t retire here but in my active working years, I keep coming back to China because it’s just amazing. Shanghai, in particular is very international and while it’s more expensive than most other cities in China you can still live here cheaply if you need to - I had to do that for about 2 years when I was in a startup and managed to live quite well on very little money, something that would not have worked in Singapore or HK.
So from my perspective, in the active years, it would be China, Singapore, HK and Taiwan in that order - possibly for retirement it would be Taiwan first and none of the other options - my next retirement option to Taiwan would be Malaysia.

This question is flawed. You have not considered the local laws and regulations. There are different laws that govern permanent residence status in each place. Often times a visa gives you more benefits than having this status. In other regards, you may lose benefits back home. China has some of the strictest policies for this, whereas Hong Kong still maintains the "one country two systems" principal.
To briefly explain the Chinese Permanent Residence status, also known as the Chinese Green Card, it is only valid for ten years, so you have to continue to maintain your status. It is available through investment, work, or marriage. With this said, the following conditions occur:
- Investments would have to be in certain "suggested" areas and for $500,000 or more.
- Marriage based ones require at least five years of marriage to apply.
- If you obtain a "Green Card" for one purpose it is not valid for another, legally, although some officers have implemented this differently. For example, if you have one based on marriage, then you would still need a work permit and related visa to work here, legally, but some officers have mentioned it's allowable.
- Subject to worldwide tax on income and assets to China
- Spending more than nine months each year in China for the last five years
To properly compare each place you will have to compare the same considerations, but not all can be treated the same.
4.Enzo Michelangeli, lives in Hong Kong (1987-present)Answered Jan 31
The choice largely depends on what one considers valuable characteristics, which in turn depends on his/her political views. I'm socially liberal and fiscally conservative, pro-globalization and in favour of free trade and free movement of people, information and capitals, I detest nationalism in all its forms (including the various forms of localism, independentism and what in the West goes under the name of “identitarianism”) and I don't care much for universal suffrage (also because I sistematically find myself in a tiny minority!). So I 'm casting my ballot for Hong Kong (where indeed I'm living). On the other three jurisdictions, here are my views:
Singapore comes quite close, with a territorial tax system and a generally progressive, pro-science and pro-market government, but information is much less free than in Hong Kong, its Judiciary is overly obsequious to the government, and its long-term future critically depends on the stability of its two big neighbours, Indonesia and Malaysia.
[Mainland] China has the fastest-growing economy and, since the 80’s, a positively pro-development, market-friendly attitude, but the rule of law is still shaky, the Judiciary is not independent from the Executive, and I find its censorship of online media deeply annoying.
Taiwan suffers from its internal cultural division between a China-friendly (and pro-business) north, politicaly expressed by the KMT, and a China-hostile (and populist) south, which is a stronghold of nativist parties such as DPP and TSU. In recent years its economic growth has been sluggish and its future critically depends on its relationship with China, which may be difficult if the support for the KMT will continue to decline.

Easy answer: if language is not a barrier, China. But China is huge, so it gets the advantage. You should be more specific: what city in China???
if you say BeiJing or Shanghai then Singapore still wins. SG has anything you may want and you can live there at very different standards. Taipei? For what? HK? Nice except for weather and smog and you pay for the nice part. Unlike SG you can’t live a decent life on little income.

I would say Singapore or Hong Kong: the commonly accepted lingua franca in both is English, which most people from most countries can speak. In Mainland China and Taiwan you need to speak Chinese, as English is far less common. If you live in Shanghai and you have a higher income, you might be able to avoid any contact with people who don’t speak English, but it would be an extra effort.
Hong Kong and Singapore also have far higher standards of living, regardless of your nationality or ethnic group, compared to Mainland China or Taiwan. Hygiene tends to be better, and services and public transport are more reliable. Average salaries are higher, too.
From older acquaintances (namely those with kids), I seem to understand that Singapore would be a better fit for someone moving with a family: while education in Hong Kong is certainly very good and crime rates are also very low, I think Singapore is even better. On the other hand, be aware that school applications (starting from kindergarten: an expat colleague in Hong Kong had to fly his kids from Europe to do interviews for primary school and kindergarten!) are insanely competitive in both cities.
Both Hong Kong and Singapore have lively and decently-sized expat communities, so you can keep in contact with the homeland
