A group of 175 Chinese tourists were left stranded at Narita International Airport in Tokyo Japan on Jan. 24 2018.

And it did not go down well.

24-hour delay

According to Haiwainet the Chinese tourists were scheduled to board a Jetstar Japan flight GK35 at 9.45pm on Wednesday night (Jan. 24).

But due to bad weather in Shanghai the flight was delayed for 24 hours — as the next flight to Shanghai by the budget Japanese carrier would be available a full day later.

However the situation boiled over on Thursday morning Jan. 25.

This occurred after a Chinese tourist was reportedly stopped from going to a vending machine on the second floor of the departure hall.

An exchange of words took place between the Chinese tourists and airline staff which then escalated into a physical altercation.

Local police arrived at the scene and tried to take one of the tourists away even reportedly tearing his clothes in the process.

Based on the video footage both the tourists and officers were seen pulling and shoving one another.

In the midst of the chaos some tourists even broke out in song singing the Chinese national anthem as a show of protest.

The Chinese embassy eventually stepped in helping to make arrangements for the Chinese tourists to diffuse the situation.

They successfully negotiated with the airline ending with the latter agreeing totreat the stranded tourists properly pay for their meals and arrange a flight out.

While some tourists agreed to accept the accommodations provided around 100 of them stayed behind at the gate even though the airport was scheduled to close at 11.00 pm.

All of the Chinese tourists excluding the man who was detained by the police arrived at Shanghai on Friday morning.

In a statement released later by the embassy they asked the Japanese police to handle the case in a “fair and just manner” and protect the “legitimate rights and interests of all parties concerned”.

Preferential treatment from Jetstar Japan

The Chinese tourists had claimed that while Jetstar Japan took care of the five Japanese tourists who were supposed to be on the same flight the non-natives were left to figure things out on their own.

They said not only did the airline refuse to provide them with access to Mandarin-speaking staff they told them to collect their own baggage and settle their own accommodation issues.

They also accused the airline’s staff of having a “very poor attitude” repeatedly telling the Chinese tourists to “get out” in English .”

A friend of mine missed a connection back to Australia in Chongqing because of 差不多 and was lied to and ignored for hours until he realized that he wasn't getting to Oz.

As someone who has had my fair share of dicking at the hands of airlines those dumb cunts who stayed are fucking retarded. You get delayed more than 8 hours and you are entitled to room and board and round trip to the hotel. I wish all my flights got a day delay in a T1 city.

This was a "budget" airline; the cheapest seat in the air. You get what you pay for.
The only thing forcing them to do anything was the garbage polluted weather of Shanghai.
I say fuck these nationalist assholes. They're the kind of people who tarnish China's international reputation.

The problem is the fighting with police refusing to follow directions and expecting things that are undeserved (buying the cheapest flight expecting royal service).

So quite a few problems.

And just to pile on top of that singing the national anthem? Like what's that supposed to accomplish? Some sort of country vs country division?

People under stress do strange things. No flight - lots of problems for lots of people. The way airlines are usually handing this is inhuman I've had shit experiences myself. So 'refusing to follow directions' - maybe I'd do the same hard to tell without more details. But painting this as purely uncivilized behavior is not helping.

If someone's response to minor hardship is to turn to violence then it is purely uncivilised behaviour and they deserve scorn.

Budget airlines don't provide for these situations. That's not a secret. However travel insurance and more expensive airlines do. The onus was on the passengers to manage themselves in the situation and they ungracefully failed to do so.

I agree but we don't know all circumstances that's my point here. I certainly don't endorse violence but that goes both ways if all they wanted was to sleep at the airport then I don't see what the big deal is... Of course it's a big IF but we can't know for sure.

The blame is on the Chinese passengers for acting like they live in a zoo. The airline had zero - zero reason to give them diddly squat. The passengers signed up for the cheapest flight with the most restrictions - and that's what they got.

Narita has a really stupid poilcy of closing the terminals at 12. This means if your flight was delayed or cancelled you're basically out on the cold street outside until 5 or 6 when they reopen. If you know that you get a hotel or choose to freeze.

I can well imagine this was explained in Japanese and English but maybe not Chinese or that it was explained but that the Chinese wanted the airline to pay for the hotel .

The main problem here though is Narita closing the terminal and not letting people stay in it over night. I'd be pretty angry at being thrown out into the cold. However I'd also probably get a hotel knowing this and I wouldn't have high expectations for a budget airline to pay for it.

One flight with Vanilla Air cancelled 6 hours before departure no compensation had to apply for a refund.

Another flight with Peach Airlines from Haneda which was supposed to leave late at night delayed by 10 hours or so no compensation airport hotel charging 400 bucks a night no way to get out of the airport at reasonable cost.

Worst experiences ever by far and I fly a lot.
