An elementary school in Oklahoma is takingextreme measures to protect students in case of a school shooting like the onein Parkland, Florida.

Healdton Public Schools, in Healdton,Oklahoma, has installed seven bulletproof shelters inside classrooms in thetown's elementary schools and two larger ones in their middle school, ABC'sOklahoma City affiliate KOCO reported.

Officials are working to bring the sheltersto the town's high school next.

"When tornadoes strike, and Lord helpus, when you have an intruder on campus, to know that you have somewhere to goquickly for the safety of your students, it's very relaxing,"superintendent Terry Shaw told KOCO.

Shaw said he went so far as to test thebulletproof shelters, built by a company called Shelter-in-Place, himself --getting inside while the room was shot at. The company said they were the firstshelters to be installed in the U.S.

The shelters in the elementary school caneach hold 35 students and two teachers.

There are only about 3,000 residents inHealdton, according to KOCO -- the same number of students who attendedParkland's Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. Seventeen students andteachers were shot and killed allegedly by a former student at the school onValentine's Day.

How do you lock and unlock such a room?Wouldn't it be better to simply change out the classroom entry door so allclassrooms have a bullet resistant and lockable door?

Weapons, bulletproof rooms, police, bulletproof blankets, arming teachers, military, archaic laws etc etc are alleffects of gun violence that failed and will continue to fail as long as thecauses of crime are ignored.

How will they get to the shelters. The kidsin FL left the classes for a fire alarm. It was all over in a few minutes.Seems like that would be a great expense for something that you don't have timeto get to.

There was one county, I forget where, buttheir police department substations were badly in need of repair. They draftedan idea to relocate the substations to the unused space and portable buildingsat the local schools. This saves tax money on upgrading/repairing existingsubstations, provides added security and police presences at the schools andgives kids and parents a chance to interact with their law enforcementhopefully in a positive way. They did mention that no offenders will be broughtinto the schools for processing, that would be handled at their main stationand jails. This might not be a bad idea.

When you have a problem with bugs you fixthe problem. Not try to find a way to live with bugs. When you have a problemwith water leaks, you fix the problem not try to find a way to live with waterleaks. Why is this any different? Instead of trying to find a way to live in aworld with mass shootings, perhaps we should fix the problem.

Some years ago, our schools installedone-way doors from the classrooms to the outside for fire safety....it wassafer to immediately walk outside from the classroom than to go through asmoke-filled hallway. When they made changes to the school in the event of a schoolshooting, they merely changed these doors to not have windows. If ANYTHING goeswrong...fire, gunman, etc....the kids can just run outside and even run home ifthey have to rather than being sitting ducks hiding under their desks.

This is what I see happening: Further guncontrol reform gets passed, reducing the numbers of guns used in schoolshootings. Bullet proof rooms further reduce gun-related deaths when a schoolshooting does occur. Would-be mass shooters who are deterred by gun-focusedmass shooting measures turn into mass bombers instead and start bringing pipebombs on campus which are currently easier to produce than it is to buy afirearm. Bullet proof rooms that were effective at saving lives against certainthreats now become consolidated student death traps against a common threat.See Europe for an example of less shootings and more bombings.
