1. There are more Indians in China (and notjust the big cities like Beijing & Shanghai) than you might realize. Foundthis out on a new year party in an Indian restaurant.

2. Westerners are seen more in Indianrestaurants than Indians or Chinese.

3. Learnt about Tai Chi, which really iscool.

4. Get really strange looks from people invillages, especially young children, who might never have seen non-Chinesebefore.

5. Kids speak to you in English to practicetheir English, which they can't do with their parents who don't speak English.

6. Public transport is amazing. The frequencyof bus/train is really good.

7. Want to visit a town that is 700kms away. How long would that take by train? 12hours, night train? Nope. 3hrs by train!!!

8. Crowd control in subways, amazing.

9. Pinyin is still not the exactpronunciation. You think you have it right, but you are not.

10. Peoplework hard.

11. Peoplesmile.

12. Peopleare kind and friendly.

13. Easierto bargain. Your skills honed in India comes handy.

14. Peoplein mainland China are much kinder & gentle than those in Hong Kong.

15. Peopletake their health seriously.

16. Chineseare blessed with natural friend.  Theydon't have to do any exercise and still remain very fit. A Chinese friend ofmine explained it as 'its in our genes'.

17. Chinais not that different from India.

18. Thatlonging that if only India also grows as fast as China.

19. Theappreciation people show when you use Chinese words, Xie Xie!!

20. Publicsmoking, especially in closed spaces like restaurants. Glad this was banned inIndia.

21. Hey,I know that mobile brand!! It's available in India too on flipkart!

22. Apple(not the fruit) is a big deal

23. It'sok to make kids walk and not carry them everywhere.

24. Mostof the children are being raised by their grandparents while the parents arebusy with their career.

25. Yousee a lot of old, very old people, and they are fit.

26. Thegovernment destroys good roads and builds them again, just to createemployment. Believe me, true story.

27. Flightsare almost always delayed. People take it for granted that flights will bedelayed and they plan their schedules accordingly. Hello Air China!!

28. Youget a lot of greens (leafy vegetables like spinach, coriander leaves etc) inthe markets. But boy it is tough to get Mint (pudina).

29. Youare vegetarian and will have trouble in China! Don't believe it. People hereeat more vegetables than a lot of us.

30. Whatabout all the 'Chinese eat snakes, frogs, lizards, cockroaches' hoopla. Don'tbelieve any of it. They eat more of Chicken, Duck, Turkey, Sheep, Cow, Pig.

31. Andby the way, my regular lunch place does server frog & dog among othermeats. I trust the chef knows which meat I order for.

32. Yes,it is common to find dog meat 'curry' in restaurants. I hear this is morecommon in the Canton region.

33. No,I haven't tried any exotic meat in China. I say in China. You can't holdagainst me that one time I had crocodile spring roll in London. OK, let's nottalk about it.

34. Itis easy/common to get Snake, Frog or Turtle meat. Just go to a meat market or asuper market, see which snake/frog/turtle appeals to you (they are alive &kicking (ok, not so much kicking) in a water tank). Point your finger at it andyou have your meat for lunch ready.

35. Thevariety of fruits & vegetables available is refreshing.

36. Placeswith 'Halal' sign brings images of Briyani & Kebabs to your mind. Not inChina. But the 'pull noodles' that you get in these places is a killer. Pullnoodles with potato, chillies, onion..yum yum.

37. Chinesewhile speaking English answer your implied question and not the actualquestion. A typical conversation:
Me:Hi XXXX, would you mind translating this food menu for menu to find omlette?(expecting answers like No, No problem, Let me do it...)
XXXX:Yes
Me:(In mind voice:) oh, does that mean he minds doing it for me, so he won't doit?
Learning:XXXX answered the 2nd part of my question, which is 'translate the menu'.
Tobe kept in mind when someone is saying Yes or No.

I spent about a year in China and I loved my time there. Experiences vary dependingon the city you live in. But even in big cities like Beijing and Shanghai, racism exists (to a lesser extent, but still). In part because Chinese peopledon't have much exposure to black foreigners. The assumption is we're all poorand from Africa. (People were regularly confused when I told them I'mAmerican.)

Butoverall I had amazing experiences. People were warm and welcoming, invited meto their homes for dinner, etc. Even in smaller cities, I was greeted withkindness. However, my experiences are biased. 1. I speak some Chinese. So eventhough my accent was terrible, people were impressed and more willing to engageme. 2. I'm a woman. Black men in China receive the worst treatment relative toother foreigners. They're kicked out of bars, people assume they're criminals, etc.

There'sthis joke among foreigners in China that we're all C list celebrities. Photosand gawking are a normal part of living in China. But whites do have someadvantages in that they are viewed as better looking, more educated, morewealthy, more trustworthy etc. So for example, a white guy would have an easiertime making friends and dating local girls than a black guy.

Peoplewould always give me backhanded compliments, like telling me I'm pretty (for ablack girl) or that they liked the way I looked (but I should stay out of thesun). These things occur in the US as well. Everyone is just more politicallycorrect with their phrasing in the US (because of the history). China has aculture that prefers pale skin and brutal honesty.

ButI do think the current mindset on race is changing, especially among youngerpeople. They're friendlier and more open minded. Whenever I was at a bar, aChinese person always bought me a drink. (Men and women.) Not to hit on me butas if to say, "Welcome to my country!" You don't get that kind ofhospitality anywhere else, white or black!
