Germans would actually welcome thewithdrawal of American troops stationed in their country, a new poll has found– as Donald Trump threatens to pull the plug on military support. The finding comes on the first day of aNato summit in which the US president is urging Europe to spend more on defenceif it wants to continue to receive American military protection. But far from being seen as a threat, aYouGov poll for the dpa news agency found that more Germans would welcome thedeparture of the 35,000-strong American force than would oppose it.42 per cent said they supported withdrawalwhile just 37 per cent wanted the soldiers to stay, with 21 per cent undecided.Last month the US media reported that theUS government was in the process of assessing the cost of keeping troops inGermany ahead of a possible withdrawal, citing Pentagon sources. But the policy of actually pulling out ofthe country has not actually reached the negotiating table in his week’sBrussels summit and is not expected to be discussed as a possibility – for now.The cause of US withdrawal enjoyssignificant support from across the political spectrum in Germany but isparticularly strong with the supporters of certain parties. The United States continues to devote moreresources to the defence of Europe when the Continent’s economy, includingGermany’s, are doing well and security challenges abound. This is no longersustainable for usDonald Trump in letter to Angela MerkelVoters for the left-wing Die Linke areparticularly in favour of withdrawal, with 67 per cent backing it, as aresupporters of the far-right AfD, on 55 per cent. Greens also back withdrawal by48 per cent.Less supportive of withdrawal are votersfor the centre-right CDU, at 35 per cent, the SPD at 42 per cent, and the FDPat 37 per cent. The same poll also found significantopposition to militarism in general in the country. Just 15 per cent of allGermans agree with Angela Merkel that the country should increase its militaryspending to 2 per cent of GDP by 2024, with 36 per cent saying the country'salready spends too much on its military.Mr Trump warned Angela Merkel and otherEuropean leaders in leaked letters last month that there was “growingfrustration in the United States that some allies have not stepped up aspromised” on defence spending.“The United States continues to devote moreresources to the defence of Europe when the Continent’s economy, includingGermany’s, are doing well and security challenges abound. This is no longersustainable for us,” he said.US Representative to Nato Kay BaileyHutchison has however struck a softer tone ahead of the Brussels meeting, stating ahead of the summit that “every one of our allies are alreadyincreasing defence spending”.US troops have been stationed in Germanysince the Second World War and the country has the second largest militarypresence after Japan, which has also been home to US bases since the sameconflict. There are between 30 and 40 US militarybases in Germany, a significant reduction from the 200-300 that were locatedthere until the end of the cold war.

DKWhen can westart? Germany doesn't need your money.

Jesse2013Trump is inthe pocket of Russia. Their plan is for Trump to weaken the US Economy, destroyUS military ties to Europe so Russia can take over the liberated countries thatthe Soviet Union had in its Orbit. Russia wants all those countries back, including Ukraine. Russia wants Trump to divide Americans. TRUMP is succeedingon all counts.

Jeane LuneJustin, itis not about money. It is about the threat of Russia. StanleyGermanydon't need the U.S money. The euro is far stronger than the American dollar.Also......American banks are backed by the Germany.

Steve@Jesse2013you are such a moron.@Jesse2013你真是个傻子。 hit_the_couchWe've beenpulling troops out of Germany for years. They pulled quite a few out when thearmy started its BRAC (base alignment and closure) back in '05.

anonOffer accepted!成交! guyfawkesThe United States has met the target, anddedicated 3.36 percent of GDP (around $664 billion, according to NATO figures)to military spending in 2016. Imagine what we could do with that $664 billionhere in America.

MMThe US Defense Budget has nothing to dowith any NATO budget. Not only that but the US only wastes UStaxdollars.US does have almost a whole squadron ofF35s not that they are combat ready ofcourse. So US with it's overbudget and 10years behind schedual actually makes NATO weaker. 100s of billions of US taxdollars and? WellUS somehow ordered 30+ Zumwalts and 50+ LCS which should be all in the waterready for combat. And what did you get? Yup all the money went poof on R&Dwith 2 failed classes of ships. USS FORD? 12 billion and it doesnt even work. 3years overdue and 7 more to go.Stop being the weak link in NATO and stopimagining. NATO demands the US puts up with actual military hardware. CGI andR&D won't do anything in actual combat. The annual Index of Military Strenghtreport to US Congress? US military is weak to very weak.Sorry this is unacceptable to NATO. Onlystrong members allowed.

NaishAs long as the Republinuts are in chargethe 664 billion rounded up to 1.5 trillion would be sent directly to theirbuddies in wall street.

Eric1I remember whan the US had HUNDREDS OFTHOUSANDS of troops in Germany back in the 1980's. I also remember that whenthe Cold War ended, MANY Germans protested our LEAVING Germany! As for thepresent, most of what is still in Germany is logistics, headquarters, medical, and airbases. Given the nature of the current 'strategic envorinment,' it wouldprobably be a GOOD idea to move a lot of this to Poland, as the Poles arepulling out of their old Warsaw Pact bases that were along their Western borderwith Germany, and have been moving to new bases along their Eastern border withUkraine/Belorus. That means facilities , barracks, motoor pools, trainingareas, airbases etc, etc, are all readily available for us to move into, shouldthe Poles and other Baltic nations permit it. NO need to stay in Germany, and ibelieve the Polish people would WELCOME our presence as a 'backstop' to theirown defensive arrangements.

JayAs a Military Veteran, I was stationedthere from 2007-2010. Trust me, the Germans absolutely loved all the U.S. moneyinjected into their economy. Servicemembers would buy their vehicles and payrents that were at least 30% higher than a German citizen would.

TanaI understand why we want troops stationedthere. I also support pulling the troops out. My husband was stationed there,in the 80s, in the Air Force. It was a vacation for him. Anyway, if Germanydoesn't want us there, we should pull out.

beneRe-position US troops and facilities insupportive NATO member sites.

Comammmm NATO Members don’t want any Americanbased stationner in there countries... the best is to bring everybody home...we already spent so much in the Middle East for nothing!emmm

scott w.Nothing new. I was stationed in Germany andItaly in the 80’s. On my apartment wall was painted “Regan Leave !!” So forlast 30 years Europeans wanted us to leave.

AnonymousSo, they 'hate' us and our servicemen so'much' that several hundred thousand German, Italian, and English women havemarried our men and moved to the USA. Also, they have remained steadfastmilitary, political, and economic allies ever since. A sure sign they 'hate'us.

CaiThe Germans haven’t liked the ‘Amies’ intheir country since the end of WWII. It reminds the people everyday of whatthey did. They also don’t like the internment camp memorials.

Black OpsNo need to stay where we aren't wanted. Agood way to save a ton of money as well...

UZThat is the attitude we had after WW1. Thelessons learned after WW2 created NATO. Those who forget history will repeat itdoes not apply. We are now so stupid that we know history and will still repeatit.

Ken JSo they can fire up their ovens again.

StoptimeI can believe that. I was stationed inJapan in the 1960s and there were demonstrations outside my base against theViet Nam War and for the removal of the American military presence in Japan. In truth we have never been fully wanted byall the population in any country.Would you want foreign soldiers stationedin the USA?
