Slowly but surely, a four-lane highway is beginning to take shape on the sparsely populated Central Asian steppe. Soviet-era cars, trucks and aging long-distance buses weave past modern yellow bulldozers, cranes and towering construction drills, laboring under Chinese supervision to build a road that could one day stretch from eastern Asia to Western Europe.

This small stretch of blacktop, running past potato fields, bare dun-colored rolling hills and fields of grazing cattle, is a symbol of China’s march westward, an advance into Central Asia that is steadily wresting the region from Russia’s embrace.

“This used to be Russia’s back yard,” said Raffaello Pantucci, director of International Security Studies at the Royal United Services Institute in London, “but it is increasingly coming into China’s thrall.”

This article is about a highway, but the most cost-effective way to ship goods in quantity is by rail. Why is there nothing here about a rail link between China and Europe?

It's not all strategic; some of it's just plain practical. A few hundred miles to the north and you'd have a highway spanning eleven time zones that was frozen under ice and snow for six months of the year. Like driving across Wyoming in the winter multiplying the distance by twenty times! No one wants to drive on ice and snow for those vast distances, and no one wants to clean the roads and keep them clear for hundreds of miles between villages. Although, as a trucker, I do have to say that I'm encouraged anytime we see a move away from ships and planes and back to the old-fashioned way of moving freight by way of good old diesel engines. Just don't have a tire blowout somewhere out there or you might have to wait a day or two for another passing vehicle to come by. The area still relies on trains as its primary transportation mover.

Another cynical and rather pathetic attempt at bad-mouthing China. Why does it have to be zero-sum game between China and Russia? There is tremendous gain for both vis-a-vis balancing with respect to the US. Quoting a single-authored eight year old paper regarding migrant workers to bolster a major point, it's rather a desperate attempt to me. Time will tell. The progress of integration may be bumpy but the general direction is obvious and positive. What's wrong with better infrastructure and more trade? Far better than exporting wars and conflict as the US does most of the time.

I've been to these central Asian countries, and let me tell you, there are plenty of reasons to be skeptical. Central Asia is bare, windswept and empty of people, except for a few cities. It certainly will never be a significant export market for China's goods. There are only 2 possible uses for Central Asia as far as China is concerned: Natural resources, and possibly as a thoroughfare for a road linking Europe and China. There are already other ways of getting goods between China and Europe... if China wants to go ahead and spend billions of dollars on a redundant highway through no-mans-land, I guess good luck to them.

What of rail transport of Chinese goods to Europe via Kazakhstan and Russia? My guess is that it's been greatly reduced, if not cut off entirely, by sanctions imposed on Russia.

The articles or reporters at WaPo always trying to pay political games when it comes to business relationship between China and other nations. This article serves nothing but the objective of creating doubts and schism between Russia and China. And it is doing this at the bidding of the gov in Washington. There was quite a bit of news about US gov using newspaper publications to do propaganda during the cold war. I have no doubt, they are doing it now. I just hope this reporter is not part of that grand scheme against China.

I have yet to come across any articles by western media which did not try to cast aspersion on activities by the China government. From the metro in Ethiopia to the rail lines in central Africa. 
The question turn up and remain unanswered is that the western power and USA had years on hands before China ventured into Africa and what good had they done for Africa?
What China had done in Africa is positive for the development of Africa whatever maybe their intentions and if USA and the western powers feared losing influence they can join in - competition should not hurt - in fact that the backbone of capitalism - but then USA had always been practising imperialism- go in buddy with the head of the country ( by a lot of means ) and try to exercise maximun influence.

Its also not likely you'll be coming across any positive articles in the future, despite the good works in Africa and elsewhere....China is just to intimidating for the white man, European or American, as the Chinese approach to the rest of the world only shows up the centuries of racism and exploitation of the West. The Chinese have always represented THE existential threat to Western hegemony, fear of "the yellow peril" really is a thing.
