BEIJING (Reuters) - Farmers are illegally growing genetically modified corn in China's northeast, said environmental non-profit Greenpeace on Wednesday, in a report that may generate further distrust of the government's ability to ensure a safe food supply.
Beijing has spent billions of dollars to develop GMO crops that it hopes will ensure food supplies for its 1.4 billion people but has not yet approved commercial cultivation amid deep-seated anti-GMO sentiment. The new findings seem to confirm concerns that Beijing will be unable to supervise the planting of GMO crops once commercial cultivation is permitted, leading to widespread contamination of the food chain with GM varieties.

In its report, Greenpeace said 93 percent of samples taken last year from corn fields in five counties in Liaoning province, part of China's breadbasket, tested positive for GMO contamination.
Furthermore, almost all of the seed samples taken from grain markets and samples of corn-based foods at supermarkets in the area also tested positive.

CHINA cannot be trusted. Don't buy CHINESE produce. It is appearing in AMERICAN grocery stores. Don't buy Mexican produce either. Mexican farmers have been known to irrigate crops with raw sewage during times of drought.

When is Monsanto going to sue the Chinese for patent infringement? They will destroy a small farmer in this country for planting without paying, yet China can steal their patent without repercussion, just like they've done with every other product.

This news on the heels of the FDA just approving Frankenfish. I would feel a lot better about our food supply if there was independent testing by someone without a dog in the fight. I sickens me to think that our govs can feed us whatever they like without even telling us. Also meats were taken of the "COOL" list as the WTO approved sanctions against the US for unfair trade practices.
My guess is at least the Frankenfish will be easy to spot simply because of its shear size. Oops, then on second thought, the fisheries will just harvest the fish when they reach a normal Salmon size because it took a fraction of the time to grow. No matter what way I look at it, Salmon will be forever off the table unless they clearly mark it caught in the wild.

It is not illegal for China to Genetically Modify Food.
"Monsanto Protection Act Signed By Obama, GMO Bill “Written By Monsanto” Signed Into Law" March 2013
As I've said many times, This has being going on for a long time world wide and will continue to go on legal or not.
You have to trust the science, right???

In 2000, with the creation of golden rice, scientists genetically modified food to increase its nutrient value for the first time. As of 2011, the US is the leading country in the production of GM foods. Twenty-five GM crops had received regulatory approval.[23] In 2015, 92% of corn, 94% of soybeans, and 94% of cotton produced in the US were genetically modified strains.[24]

I'd be interested by what exactly Greenpeace thinks they or anyone else will do about it. Not buy it? Fer cryin out loud. They got 1.4 billion people to feed. And even if some countries refuse to buy their corn, there are people hungry enough to take a chance.

There is so much that we do not know. What we do know is that the GMO food grown has really benefited everyone. There has not been any health risks associated with it, and it has dramatically lessened the price of food, not to mention saving lives that otherwise would have starved to death, if not for the abundance that has been created. I can't wait for the new CRISPR technology to further enhance, and increase the food, and life for us all.

What about French variety of wheat called Renan which is especially useful to farmers who don’t use pesticides because it is very disease-resistant. It was bred in the 1940s and has passed on its traits to many other wheat varieties. Stephen Jones, at the celebrated Washington State University Bread Lab.
Renan hasn’t undergone testing because the European Union decided that GMOs created with these techniques were exempt. There were just too many good crops coming from these techniques — and already in circulation — to subject them all to the scrutiny that has thwarted many transgenic crops. The same was true of mutagenesis. There are just so many wonderful mutants: disease-resistant cocoa, my favorite organic brown rice, barley used for craft beer and expensive whiskey, the Star Ruby and Ruby Red grapefruits, peas, pears, peanuts, peppermint, and thousands more.
Stephen Jones.

Once you plant and that pollen is picked up by the wind there is no control.
Everything is contaminated, and it cannot be put back in the bottle.

It is not the danger for human consumption that is the issue with GMOs, it is taking natural seed stock and making it not reproduce so one always has to buy the seeds from Monsanto. It is all about controlling the food supply. It takes control out of growing one's garden or crop from last years seed stock and places control of the food supply in the hands of a corporation. Just try planting second generation GMO seeds and all you get is foliage, no fruit or vegetables, if they grow anything at all.
Once GMOs contaminate a nation's seed supply, then all plants are one-generation sterile and don't reproduce and the only way to grow more food is to rely on the monopoly. This is the greatest threat to GMO crops. It destroys nature.

Not too long ago a Chinese national was arrested in the Midwest after he was observed hanging around corn fields. It turned out he owned a seed company in China and was taking corn from research plots. Anyway, this article is not surprising. China has no rule of law and operates diplomatically with a my way or the highway attitude. China, the peaceful rising nation that has stolen billions and billions in intellectual property. The largest theft of wealth known in human history. China is a pathetic joke of a country and needs to be held accountable for their lawless crimes.
