What's up with the number ticket system (and the scalping that goes along with it) instead of allowing people to schedule appointments instead of waiting in line all day?

It's just mass oversubscxtion. If they switched to an appointment system the scalpers would find a way to take that over too. What they're taking advantage of isn't one scheduling system over another it's scarcity.

What really needs to happen is they need to find a way to shift the everyday illnesses to some kind of GP clinic system where doctors can keep track of their patients over time and hospitals don't get flooded with mildly sick contagious people every time there is a flu outbreak.

They also need to get that general care more accessible in the countryside and smaller towns.
Shit there's so much stuff they could/should do. But I still think just changing the scheduling system isn't going to help at all.

Add that the Chinese are massive hypochondriacs. With an appointment system they'd be booked months into the future.

It’s funny that you mention shifting care to GP clinics. My cousin is a dermatologist in China and she said she heard in America we don’t get to see a specialists for months at a time and how at least in China you can see a specialist anytime.

I tried telling her while the US system sucks in many ways it was still better than the Chinese system of flooding every doctor with a cold. I tried to explain seeing a GP is fairly easy and requires little wait if you have decent insurance just like seeing a specialist for an urgent matter does not (typically) require months of waiting. By shunting most people to internists it alleviates the long waits they see in China for specialists. I even used my husband who is a medical specialist as an example. He has a long wait but that’s for follow ups and nonurgent care he doesn’t let people wait if the GP contacts him for an urgent case. For some reason she didn’t understand the concept of follow up care as a standard of care...? But it’s hard to explain the complex American system and she only hears of the negative bits through the media and maybe a few friends.

我告诉她美国的医疗系统有很多垃圾不足之处，但是依然比中国医院里塞满了只得了个感冒的患者要好，去小诊所看病非常方便也不需要等很久，而且如果你有很好的医疗保险，在紧急的情况下需要找专家问诊的话也不会需要等几个月那么久。把大多数的病人分流到内科医生那里，就能缓解像中国那种为了挂专家号排长队的情况了。我丈夫是个医疗专家，以他为例，他会把一些非紧急的和后续诊疗病人排在后面，但如果诊所打电话过来说有情况紧急的病人就无需等待。感觉我表妹有点不理解标准诊疗和后续诊疗的区别，但是想把美国复杂的医疗系统解释清楚确实很困难，而她只是从一些媒体或者朋友那听闻了一些有关这方面的负面信息。

I also pointed out for my child’s pediatrician I can call and get a same day appt if it’s urgent and just drop in at the appt time. She was not convinced that this was common...? It’s weird that my personal experience can’t change her mind.

我还指出，如果我的孩子出现紧急情况，我可以直接跟我孩子的儿科医师约到当天就诊。她表示不太相信这是普遍的情况，我觉得很奇怪，我的真实经历都没法让她信服。

I didn’t want to bother with pointing out few westerners goes to China for care and most that live in China think the medical system is pretty subpar as compared to any western countries even America.

我都懒得跟她说，就没有多少西方人会专门去中国看病，住在中国的西方人也觉得中国的医疗系统比起任何西方国家甚至美国来说都要差一点。

China really could benefit from better medical management and some top down reform. I wonder if it’s just my cousin who seem to comfort herself with the illusion that the American system is “similarly bad”.

中国真的可以从更好的医疗管理体系以及自上而下的医疗改革中获得更多好处。我想是不是我的表妹只是在用美国医疗系统貌似“同样很差”这种幻觉来安慰她自己罢了。

I’ve always felt that the American healthcare system is a study in contrasts. From the actual medical perspective American healthcare is excellent. Hospitals are for the most part clean and modern and the staff are very helpful and well-trained.
It’s when you get into the financial side of things that you understand how fucked up it all is. American healthcare is great but mind-bogglingly expensive.

It’s clean and nice because it’s catered to the rich. It’s not accessible to everyone that’s why they can keep up with the upkeep. Ever been to an inner city hospital in the US? It’s quite a mess. Regardless I wouldn’t really compare US most developed countries. US healthcare is a joke to both Americans and non-Americans alike. Except for the rich of course.

My son was born in my city’s public hospital a few months ago. He’s also spent a few nights in the ICU at our city’s pediatric hospital which is one of the best in the nation. The level of professionalism care and comfort was amazing every step of the way

Is it going to cost me a goddamned fortune? Yes it will and that’s WRONG. Healthcare should be free for all. The quality of the healthcare is phenomenal (and much better than is available to the vast majority of Chinese) it’s just incredibly expensive.

Yes I have. My foster brother was shot and sent to ER where I spent a week with him there. My friend works for EMT in Los angles county. It’s a mess.

Last time I went to the hospital I was in and out (with my prescxtion) in less than 30 minutes. The lines were efficient and everything was well organized. It was great.

上一次我去医院，进去到（带着我的处方）出来只花了不到30分钟。整个过程高效，一切都管理得井井有条。感觉真棒。

I wonder this too. I went to the local public hospital for some routine blood tests. Never again.

They do schedule appointments. Not sure where you are but in the city where I'm living (T2) you can get a number online or by phone call and some hospitals even allow to make an appointment by wechat.

公立医院是可以预约的。不知道你们住哪座城市，但是在我所居住的城市（二线），你可以通过网络或者电话进行预约，有些医院甚至可以使用微信进行预约。

My cousin told me at the big city hospital they take their son to when he's really sick it costs about 1000rmb per year to subscribe to their phone phone appointment service. Since they only go there sometimes (they live about an hour away) and they had only a modest income it was considered an extravagance. I'm not sure if other hospitals have a similar system. But given that medical care can get expensive for the average Chinese I think this is one area people avoid to save money.

Some do or at lest there are ways to find when your favorite doctor has a spare slot and book that.

They do schedule some appointments depending on the issue. I recently had a cataract operation in Guangzhou. Seeing the consultant professor (for 30 kuai) was always booked via Wechat and after queuing for for eye test each time I was generally seen within 30-45 minutes of my planned time.

The operation buildup was something else though! Day before I needed 5 tests; blood ECG Chesty X-ray two different types of eye tests. It took ALL DAY to complete 5 tests which totaled 30 minutes. For each one I took a ticket and waited 1 hour....so 5 tests = full day at hospital.

做手术又是另一回事了！手术前一天，我需要做5项检查，包括血液检查、心电图、胸透、两种不同的眼部检查等。5项检查花了我一整天的时间，但实际检查时间总共就30分钟。每做一项检查，我取一张号，然后等上一个小时.....所以，5项检查就等于在医院待一整天。

On the day of the op I got there at 8am. Had to queue with 40 others to have the final consultant check where they tell you which lens type options you have. I questioned mine...so had to wait an extra 2 hours...then finally at 1pm I was called to have my eye anesthetized and cleaned/sterilised. From that point it was literally minutes till I was in the theatre watching two ops being finished before I lay on the table. 10 minutes later and it was over.

Because scheduled appointments don't work well in China. It requires planning a somewhat scheduled life which is not typical of the culture in China.

因为在中国预约挂号并不适用。预约需要一定程度的时间安排，这不符合中国人的文化。
