TAIPEI (Reuters) - Taiwan President Ma Ying-jeou will fly to the Taiwanese-held island of Itu Aba in the disputed South China Sea on Thursday, a visit that comes amid growing international concern over rising tensions in the contested waterway.

台湾总统马英九将于周四飞抵台湾实际控制下，位于有争议的南中国海的伊图阿巴岛（太平岛），这次访问将使国际社会对于有争议水域日渐紧张的局势越加关切。

Ma's office said the president, who steps down in May, wanted to offer Chinese New Year wishes to residents on Itu Aba, mainly Taiwanese coastguard personnel and environmental scholars. Ma will spend a few hours on Itu Aba, known as Taiping in Taiwan, his office added.

马英九办公室称，五月即将卸任的马总统，愿把中国春节的祝福带给伊图阿巴岛（太平岛）的居民，后者主要是台湾海岸警卫队的工作人员以及环保学者。马英九将在伊图阿巴岛，台湾称太平岛上逗留数个小时。

What is this Itu Aba? ROC took over this only Island that can sustain habitation after the surrender of Japan using the American ship and named it "Tai-Ping". That was more than 70 years ago whereas the Philippines, the Vietnam were colonies and the UNCLOS was not even existing . A team of researchers from Taiwan just visited Itu Aba Island last week. Their report shows that Itu Aba is not only an "island" as defined in UNCLOS; it is also capable of sustaining human habitation. This means that, in the opinion of the research team, Itu Aba Island has an Exclusive Economic Zone to itself. The team was sponsored by the association of international law in Taiwan.

The DDP has been claiming their island history is different to Mainland China .It would be greedy if they want independent and continue to keep island base on KMT 's 1940's claim on island thousand's mile away.

Great move. That really boosts China's claim in SCS (especially the Spratlyts). Both Taiwan's and China's claims actually are the same claim. It was Taiwan (the official name is Republic of China and in 1947 it was in Nanjing, China) established the nine dash line in SCS as a result of WW II. China assumed Taiwan's claim legally since China replaced Taiwan's seat (membership) in UN.
