Electric cars have their highest-profile prophet in US-based entrepreneur Elon Musk and their widest adoption in Norway, but China's vast auto market will decide their worldwide future, experts say.

The country is already the world's largest auto market and took the number one spot for electric models last year, with some 247,000 "zero emission" cars sold -- quadruple the number in 2014 -- according to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers.

So far only around one percent of cars owned in China are electric, but authorities are pushing them as a potential solution to the country's crippling air pollution health crisis.

But experts say winning even a small chunk of Chinese sales -- which totalled 24.6 million last year -- could be a game-changer for electric cars.

The US will need a two tier set of safety codes. The safety equipment currently adds 1000+ pounds to many vehicles.
Shedding the pounds would do wonders for battery life. The Chinese vehicles won't have the restrictions.
Highways may restrict which vehicles can be driven on them, like laws which prohibit some scooters on interstates and limited access freeways.

Do it China. They've been holding back in the west with this technology a bit. Maybe the east can open it all the way up. Maybe it will help China cut back on their massive amounts of pollution as well while they're at it.

These are the same problems and arguments that were floating around in the US 5 years ago. Tesla has changed that quite a bit, but they arguments are still here. When the problem is solved in the US, they will be solved elsewhere in the world too. Hopefully, that will be very soon.

It is the power plants that cause the bulk of the smoke and haze in China.
Electric autos will not improve that situation!
