So Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbll has announced that the next generation of Australian submarines will be built by French firm DCNS.

Over coming days we may well see stories emerge of Chinese relief at this decision, and maybe even implications that Australia has buckled to Chinese pressure not to choose the Japanese bid. But one thing to keep in mind as you read these stories is that Australia is still doubling the size of its submarine fleet from 6 to 12. Whether the contractor is French, German, Japanese or other, that is still a substantial statement of Australia’s strategic anxieties, which inevitably center around China’s long-term intentions.

Agree that this is not a "win" for China, but this is a setback for Abe Shinzo and his administration. Glad that our Aussie friends made a choice on its own terms and not because of lobbying from us and the Japanese. Japan needs to play this diplomatically, and not as rejected suitor, full of resentments.

This time China lobbied hard against Japan in Australia. Submarine deal was a very lucrative contract worth almost $40 bil. and the Chinese did their best to make sure Japan doesn't win it. But then again, China always inveighs against Japan and works very hard around the world to axe Japanese business deals.
I can't blame China for that because they have a visceral hate for the Japanese iniquities dating back centuries.

See April 26 Yomiuri article headline "Lost Australian sub contract a blow to Japan / Abe viewed joint development as key to boosting bilateral ties".
Gen Nakatani, Japanese Defense Minister, is also quoted as determined to find out the reasons for the Aussie decision.
 This was a blow, in large part because the Japanese went from "first to worst" after lots of lobbying from Abe himself with us weighing in also.

Aussies are smart. They don't want to be mistaken as Japanese subs when they enters the waters of SCS and ECS to do reconnaissance for US. The only reason they didn't pick German's subs is similarly they don't want to associate with the South Korean's subs either.

Australian submarines, made in France, is a win for China. Contrary to the view expressed here, among friendly nations, the more arms your friend has the better. Australia remains China's friend as long as she does not buy arms from Japan. When she buys arms from Japan, she is repudiating her friendship with China.

Ridiculous article! We all know that China and Japan is not in good terms, when one some what neutral country giving 36 billion dollars to another to your rival, it always not a good sign. So for China, it is always good to see the 36 billions go elsewhere. No matter how you spin the words, the facts are same more money goes into the rival is a bad thing. Reversely, if Australia suddenly decided to give China 36 billion USD to get J20 instead the Japanese X2, tell me that it is not a bad news to Japna. LOL
