A growing caravan of Honduran migrants streamed through southern Mexico on Sunday heading toward the United States, after making an end-run around Mexican agents who briefly blocked them at the Guatemalan border.

They received help at every turn from sympathetic Mexicans who offered food, water and clothing. Hundreds of locals driving pickups, vans and cargo trucks stopped to let them clamber aboard.

Besi Jaqueline Lopez of the Honduran city of San Pedro Sula carried a stuffed polar bear in a winter cap that seemed out of place in the tropical heat. It's the favorite — and only — toy of her two daughters, 4-year-old Victoria and 3-year-old Elisabeth, who trudged beside her gleaming with sweat.

A business administration graduate, Lopez said she couldn't find work back home and hopes to reach the United States, but would stay in Mexico if she could find employment here.

"My goal is to find work for a better future for my daughters," she said.

In dozens of interviews along the journey, they have said they are fleeing widespread violence, poverty and corruption in Honduras. The caravan is unlike previous mass migrations for its unprecedented large numbers, and because it largely began spontaneously through word of mouth.

It was not immediately clear where the additional travelers came from. But people have been joining and leaving the caravan daily, some moving at their own pace and strung out in a series of columns.

Under a blazing sun, small groups of 20 to 30 paused to rest in the shade of trees on the side of the road, and by afternoon the caravan had evolved into long lines of walkers straggling for miles.

Jesus Valdivia, of Tuxtla Chico, Mexico, was one of the many who pulled his pickup truck over to let 10 or even 20 migrants hop in at a time, sometimes causing vehicles' springs to groan under the weight.

She even had kind words for Mexican police: "We are very grateful to them because even though they closed the doors to us (at the border), they are coming behind us taking care of us."、

In comments to reporters after a rally in Elko, Nevada, Trump said of Mexico's response: "I just want to say, on behalf of the American public, that we appreciate what Mexico is doing. They've really stepped up, and it will not be forgotten."

Trump also repeated: "I will seal off the border before (the migrants) come into this country, and I'll bring out our military, not our reserves."

Mexican President-elect Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said he was suggesting to Trump that the United States, Canada and Mexico seek an agreement to invest in development in Central America and southern Mexico, which is home to many of that country's poor.

"In this way we confront the phenomenon of migration, because he who leaves his town does not leave for pleasure but out of necessity," said Lopez Obrador, who takes office Dec. 1.

For Puerto, that place is North Carolina, where he has a wife and two daughters. He said he was recently deported from the United States after a brush with the law that he did not specify.

"We are going to get to the border of the U.S.," he said. "I am not going to stop. I don't care if I die."

Trump and his fellow Republicans have sought to make the migrant caravan and immigration major issues before the Nov. 6 elections, in which Republicans are battling to keep control of Congress.

A well-planned INVASION of the United States...
The Central American caravan heading to our border is organized by a group called Pueblo Sin Fronteras, but the effort is supported by the coalition CARA Family Detention Pro Bono Project, which includes Catholic Legal Immigration Network (CLIN), the American Immigration Council (AIC), the Refugee and Immigration Center for Education and Legal Services (RICELS) and the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) – thus the acronym CARA," WND reported. "At least three of the four groups are funded by George Soros' Open Society Foundation. Democrats at work creating chaos and disruption. It is time ARREST the leaders of these groups for AIDING & ABETTING in a CRIME.

Many things wrong with the language of this article. The established process for granting asylum in the US is to go to a US Conulate closest to your present location and make application. The vast majority of applications for asylum are denied because the asylum seekers do not meet the qualifications. "Seeking a better life", "poor economy/unemployment" and even "high crime" are not causes to grant asylum and in fact the same conditions exist at various times and places in the US. These people live in a democracy, Honduras is what Hondurans made for themselves, they should perhaps stay home and vote better.

This confuses me. It’s like a martial invasion and there is no legal defense anywhere for immigrants to demand entry. I’m guessing the liberals want to force the issue so we pull out the national guard and then they collectively gasp at the inhumanity of it and try to play citizen’s emotions to earn sympathy towards illegals.

Liberals play with psychology a lot. That is probably the biggest thing I despise about liberalism is how it weaponized psychology and mixed it with constant propaganda. People are aware of it, thankfully, and don’t get pulled into high brow morality games that have no sense, and most people react poorly when they find they are manipulated. Note the opinion of non-liberals on the state of our free press.

I’m now convinced to vote straight Republican. Never did before, but I can’t back people that back blatant, daily manipulation like I’ve been forced to endure in order to stay informed. The only means I have of returning the injury is through my votes, and vote I will. When Dems return to rationality I will again vote according to topic across parties. It will likely be a long wait.

Difficult humanitarian problem. I would be more sympathetic if I believed even marginally that the mob formed spontaneously. Clearly this is organized and financed by outside political operatives. The organizers do not give a whit for the welfare of the people in the mob.

All they want to do is to flood the US with illegal immigrants: One of the basic actions laid out in socialists guides to overthrow a government is to over stress public resources causing an overall decrease in quality of life thus seeding discontent with the government.

When my father came to this country from a country where persecution and unrest made it impossible to live there any longer he was required to have a job, a place to live, and a sponsor who would ensure that if he lost either of them they'd take responsibility for his needs until he could get another job or place to live. He was also required to have a working knowledge of English. What has happened in the last 50-60 years that these are no longer requirements?

Looks like a healthy, able bodied young man emerging from the river to enter Mexico in route to the US border. Tell me more about what conditions he’s fleeing????

"Migrant caravan swells to 5,000 resumes advance toward US" Get use to it. Pres. Trump is right, unless our immigration laws are changed, this will only be the tip of the iceberg.

I hope the left does their full protest when the caravan reaches our borders. We need America to see their act one more time before midterms!

I question these caravans origins, never heard of these before the last couple of years. Who starts them?

Why does it seem like the media is hand picking photos of females & crying babies & not showing the vast number of young men traveling in this caravan?

This Caravan makes me Mad. I came here legally 26 years ago . I waited 7 years to get approved.

so, we're expected to believe that these women with infants are gonna traverse the entire mountainous country of Mexico during the winter, i don't think they'll make it very far-you couldn't carry enough supplies if you were a trained hiker...

This is absolutely frightening. If they make it into the U.S., the Americans that are already Struggling Financially to survive and are unable to get assistance from the government (who are truly in need of it) will most definitely be denied even more so to accommodate these people. I am NOT Heartless, but I (along with my struggling fellow Americans) am being taxes to death already. How much more of my hard earned money needs to go to support this overflow? It's just not right!

Jim
The audacity of these people is astounding. They've been waiting to apply for asylum in Mexico only two days and they think that's too long. What do they think is waiting for them in the US? They could be in detention for days before they get a prima facie determination by an asylum officer. If that determination is negative then they're going to be deported immediately - no hearing in front of an immigration judge.

If the determination is positive then they could still be held in detention for months or even years before they get an asylum hearing. Because it's not a criminal court, they have no constitutional right to a speedy trial or an attorney. The government also has no legal obligation to cut them loose in the US to wait for their hearing. That may have been Obama's policy, but nothing in the law requires it. Seriously, this insanity has to stop.

Andrea
I'm really questioning the wisdom of a woman trekking all those miles with a toddler who recently had a heart operation and then crossing the dirty river with her. I hate to say it but if she makes it to the US and they are detained there her suing the US government when her child becomes ill and dies blaming it on the US.

This is not immigration ,it is an invasion. When captured consider them as an enemy and placed ina work camp for 10 years

Why don't we focus on the 1 in 5 (or 1 in 7 depending on the study) AMERICAN CHILDREN who go to bed hungry each night? Lets fix our own problems and pay down our debt so we don't fail. THEN, we can take in immigrants in a positive and methodical manner that won't cause our economy to fail.

In the past year 41 members of MS13 were arrested in a sweep on Long Island and charged with multiple assaults, kidnaps, murders and other crimes. All but one were here illegally. Of the 41, 17 were younger than 18 at the time of arrest and all 17 had come to the US within the two previous years as part of 'caravans'. This is fact.
