Danuta Hübner, the head of the European Parliament’s Constitutional Affairs Committee (AFCO), warned Monday that English will not be one of the European Union’s official languages after Britain leaves the EU.

欧洲议会法规委员会主席Danuta Hübner周一警告称在英国离开欧盟后英语将不再是欧盟官方语言之一。

English is one of the EU’s 24 official languages because the U.K. identified it as its own official language, Hübner said. But as soon as Britain completes the process to leave the EU, English could lose its status.

英语是欧盟24个官方语言之一，因为英国将英语确认为自己的官方语言，她说。但是一旦英国完成脱欧程序，英语将失去官方语言的地位。

“We have a regulation … where every EU country has the right to notify one official language,” Hübner said. “The Irish have notified Gaelic, and the Maltese have notified Maltese, so you have only the U.K. notifying English.”

“我们有规定。。。每个欧盟国家有权决定一门官方语言，”她说。“爱尔兰确定的是盖尔语，马耳他确定的是马耳他语，只有英国确定的是英语。”

“If we don’t have the U.K., we don’t have English,” Hübner said.

The two indispensable nations in the EU are France and Germany. One couldn’t imagine Americans being governed in Spanish, why should we be governed in English? Moreover, this could help solve the EU’s most pressing problem, French disengagement. Probably a third official language should be chosen, and it should be Slavic. Polish maybe?

In the press conf picture the speaker made it clear that she expects that changes will be adopted that will allow countries to nominate multiple languages, thus allowing Ireland to nominate both English and Gaelic. Also pointed out that there is a difference between ‘official language’ and ‘working language’.

A perfect example of why so many people, including outside of the U.K., are so fed up with Bruxelles.
English is literally the one, common language of the EU. What language do you think a Swedish MEP and an Italian MEP use when they need to discuss? English, unless they want to call a translator.
Aaand along come the EU-bureaucrats to make life more difficult for everybody, cause rules are rules, and they found some directive against common sense.
At this point, the only thing that could save the union, is to kill it, and return to the pre-1992 common market.

难怪有那么多人包括英国以外的人都已经受够了布鲁塞尔。
英语是欧盟的通用语言。你认为瑞典代表和意大利代表讨论时用什么语言？英语，除非他们用到翻译。
欧盟这些官僚让每个人的生活都更加难过了，因为规定就是规定，而且他们设立了一些违背常识的指令。
当下，唯一可以让欧洲团结的办法就是解散欧盟，并回到1992年前的欧洲共同体。
