We all get upset by Chinese eating dogs (“it's my pet I would never eat it”) and forget how common it was or perhaps still is to do the same thing in the West.

I'm not a farmer myself but many times I've heard the same story from farmer boys. In parts of Europe it's a tradition to eat lamb at Easter. It happened that children on the farm were charged with taking care of lambs or rabbits and so they developed a certain affection for them. An affection which found an abrupt end when the cute little animal appeared on the family's table.

Those people from the farm my age remember their shock and remember that their parents taught them not to get too close to their animals. We may find it horrible or not the point is it happens in our countries.

So when a Chinese says what's the difference I think of my old mates from the countryside and I struggle to find differences. I could argue with Chinese for thousand other things not this really.

P.S. I have traveled in China for so long and I still cannot get used to Chinese food. Sorry friend you keep yours and I keep mine I'll have turkey over snake and venison over dog any time. But I do not like to keep a culturally biased view on this matter.

It seems to me that if it’s a waste of resources to feed grain and water to animals so you can eat them it would be a whole order of magnitude more waste to feed grain to animals so you could feed the animals to dogs so you could eat the dogs.

On the other hand given that some religious groups forbid the eating of dog (Islam Judaism) one wonders why SJWs don’t demand that eating dog in the US be allowed — on the assumption that the First Amendment forbids us from legislating standards that are religiously motivated.

Also people forget that MOST of the dogs consumed in east Asian countries are BRED TO BE SLAUGHTERED. These aren’t household pets snatched from houses to be eaten they’re meant to be eaten.

Alternatively people have to realize the massive population of a lot of these countries. Many many people have to eat whatever they can find or they will starve to death.

I wouldn’t eat a dog if I could avoid it. If I was starving to death and found a stray dog….
I can’t say I wouldn’t do the same.

I have a problem with comparing livestock to canines… livestock from the start were domesticated for the consumption of their goods these include milk meat eggs you name it. From the dawn of human history that was their relationship to us. Canines and other domestic dogs occupy a very different role in the evolution of our cultures and societies. dogs essentially evolved along side humans as our companions. To give an example I'm sure you've heard it said how dogs are the only other animals we know of who can follow our finger to where we are pointing. Not even chimpanzees and Bonobos have this ability. Further more this ability is thought to be a genetic trait rather than a learned trait which signifies an unprecedented level of parallel evolution with humans. TLDR I think it's much different.

Edit: sorry for the terrible pacing of the long response I was on my phone at a Halloween party.

Eating dogs is really a piece of cake if you know that even some decades ago some tribes in southern west part of rural Chinese province which are referred to minority people still eating people. As far as I remember when I was a Child in 80’s I read a Chinese book talking about the tribe people. According to their tradition when someone in their family died they will shoot an arrow towards the sky. Other people in the village will come to get some meat from the dead body to go back to eat when they see the arrow. Just remember that this story is even unknown to many common Chinese. They will be as surprise as you when they hear the story. And I have no clue whether it is true or not. But at least it clearly mentions it is a tradition of that tribe for thousands years so you know no one to be blamed.

Part of 1.4 billion people eating dogs doesn’t mean all of 1.4 billion do it. It is very unfortunate for Chinese people to be treated the same when part of 1.4 billion doing something. But it is true that according to culture Chinese don’t think the same way as western culture regards to eating dogs. In many ways dogs are not as lucky as other places. In Chinese dogs are often used to refer to bad guys. And as far as I know eating dog are actually more common in Korea but we tend to remember Chinese because it has 1.4 billion people. Many weird things could happen everyday when you have 1.4 billion people.

I taught English in China for 10 years. I would look through China Daily’s page of one or two paragraph stories. for discussion topics. A section I referred to as the ‘goofy section’. One story was about animal rights .people trying to stop a truck heading to Southern China (i.e Shenzhen) full of cats. (Mostly strays probably some pets nabbed off the streets of Nanjing. The tradition is mostly a Southern China one although it is not uncommon throughout Asia.

The topic of the day ‘Is it OK to eat your pet?’ The students took the topic seriously. Some were from the area and admitted it was common there but they did not do it. One said people there would eat “anything with legs except the table.”

It is not common from my travels to China though their eating habits are one of the worst ever. They eat snakes and anything that moves including civet cats ( which brought SARS to the world) monkey brains dog meat during a festival in one part of China. Koreans are known to consume dogs more than the Chinese.

All said meat eating is not for humans which has been proven many times and other than fish which is a valuable source of protein there really is no need to kill the way they do in all continents to just satisfy their taste buds. People eat meat more for the taste now than for its value add. If one went through the millions of documentaries including videos and thesis it is the vegetarian diet which has been acclaimed to control diseases provide nourishment and at the same time contribute to reduction of ozone layer destruction.

It has been amply proven beyond doubt that a non-vegetarian needs 8 acres of fertile land as compared to one acre for the vegetarian and with the population growing the way it is wonder how much of cattle will be required to feed these voracious and gluttony mouths!

Hunger is no excuse to kill and stop a heart from beating. Imagine your loved one being killed by some other animal in the name of superiority in food chain. I just saw a lovely video where a ranch owner in South Houston had to abide by his wife who decide to name each animal became close converted to being a vegan and is hake and hearty.

Cancer of the entire digestive system and worst of all the colon is attributed to excessive meat consumption. Karma always has a way of getting back. You eat these things nature blocks your bottom and makes it as painful as when one was instrumental in killing the innocent animals who gave up their lives to feed the family when there are enough alternatives. And worst of all woe befall on all those who eat veal. Imagine your young one being taken away from the mother and eaten by someone else.

The problem is that some of the recommended ways of slaughtering dogs and cats for eating are horribly cruel. Same with monkeys. That worries me a lot more than simply the fact that they are eaten. You will be eaten some day too.

They do. And its not only dogs but cats and other game meat as well. For the Chinese food is not only food but aphrodisiac as well. Many Chinese medicines and supplementary foods are derived from land and sea based flora and fauna extracts. Shark fins bear bile tiger bones and testicles sea cucumbers abalones etc. just to name a few.
