YANGON/SHANGHAI (Reuters) - Myanmar's eight-month-old government faced a fresh crisis on Monday after four ethnic armed groups attacked security forces in the north of the country dealing a major blow to leader Aung San Suu Kyi's top goal of reaching peace with ethnic minorities.

Basic facts about the Shan:

1. They are tribal people estimated at 5 million or so living mostly in the area straddling Myanmar China (Yunnan) and Laos.

2. The vast majority of them are Buddhist followed by Christian. There are also Muslim and Christian minorities in Myanmar and all three have conflicts with the government. But the Shan are the same religion as the "Socialist Buddhist" government.

As the Shan like other minorities in Myanmar still face well-documented blatant and vicious persecution (including use of slave labor withholding basic rights imposing of cultural and religious practices village-wide rapes torture taking of resources etc.) even after "opening up" their rebel groups didn't exactly come out of nowhere though now they can also be ruthless themselves. In fact the Shan rebel groups have been fighting Myanmar since 1964 making this the longest ongoing conflict in the world even over Congo's.

But Yunnan's population which includes many Shan is sometimes sympathetic to the rebels and the Myanmar government infuriated China a couple of times by killing Chinese civilians on border strikes against rebels.)
