China passed a law at its top legislature on Sunday demonstrating its intention to put greater emphasis on Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) in its healthcare system. The law which will come into effect on July 1 2017 will improve patient access to a wider range of healthcare.

周日中国在最高立法机构通过了一项法律，表达加强中国医疗系统里中医（的地位）的计划，这项将在2017年7月1日实施的法律证明病患将得到更为广泛的医疗服务。

This ancient form of medicine has been somewhat neglected since the introduction of Western medicine under the Qing dynasty (1644-1912). Over 2000 years old Traditional Chinese Medicine covers five main areas: acupuncture qigong (exercise) massage plants and minerals and dietary therapy.

Unlike Western doctors practitioners learn the techniques of TCM from a 'master' instead of studying the discipline at university.

According to a white paper published by China's State Council Information Office in December 2016 there are 3966 TCM hospitals and 42528 TCM clinics in China employing around 452000 practitioners. These hospitals and clinics undertake an average of 910 million consultations per year.

The new law aims to protect and facilitate the development of TCM requiring regional governments to set up TCM institutions in public-funded general hospitals and mother-and-child care centres.

In addition practitioners will be able to take exams to obtain a license allowing them to practice TCM in hospitals or clinics or to work privately. Up until now these practitioners could not qualify as doctors as medical training prioritizes Western medicine and fluency in English.

另外执业医生会通过考试来得到能允许他们在医院行医或者小诊所或者自己单独看病的执业证书。直到现在，这些执业者还没有资格成为医生，因为医疗训练优先考虑西医和英语流利程度。

The new law also stipulates that TCM and Western medicine will be put on an equal footing with better training of TCM practitioners and monitoring of the use of products containing pesticides.

International exchanges and global cooperation to develop TCM are to be stepped up.

In October 2015 Tu Youyou was the first Chinese person to be awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine for her work on a traditional anti-malaria medicine. The award of this prestigious prize to a member of the Academy of Chinese Traditional Medical Sciences was met with some surprise.

在2015年10月屠呦呦由于她研制出了一个传统抗疟疾药物成为了中国首位诺贝尔药学奖得主。这个奖项被授予中国传统医学科学院的一员，这让有些人感到惊讶。

According to the World Health Organization 103 member states approved the practice of acupuncture and moxibustion (a traditional therapy which consists of burning dried mugwort on particular points on the body) 29 have passed laws on traditional medicine and 18 have included acupuncture and moxibustion in their medical insurance provisions.

There are many aspects of traditional Chinese medicine that serve very well. I hope one day soon they learn to steer clear of the more dubious practice of using rare and endangered animal parts that have no medicinal value whatsoever.

Yes I'm wondering if "official" Chines approval of traditional medicine(TCM) includes using rhinoceros horn black bear gall bladder and seahorse. All of those animals are facing extinction due in large part to TCM. There are many problematic aspects of Chinese culture that ignore environmental considerations appropriate for a small scale low technology agrarian society. China has none of those characteristics today but its deeply emxded culture of ancestor reverence continues to maintain that it is.

TCM is even making it to the USA as many surgeons are using acupuncture to put people under for surgery with better results.

Just how can TCM practitioners be obxtively qualified by a regulatory agency. After all TCM isn't based in scientific method. So qualification will have to be based on hearsay popularity endorsements by politicians and likely(in China) bribes.

Some of it works and some of it is questionable at best but the same is true for so called Western medicine. The idea is to get the true and best way and not cling to something that's not valid for the wrong reasons.

It will help save more lives cure more curable diseases and give alternative and more choices to patients seeking medical assistance.
