There is a joke in China.

A foreigner went to China and hoped to taste various Chinese food. He thought that each province has its special dishes for example Cantonese cuisine Sichuan cuisine Hunan cuisine and so on. After he tasted all of above he thought that there are different kinds of food in different cities. Seriously I think Chinese food has a quite big range. Because of our 56 ethnicities we might not be similar in what kind of food we gonna to enjoy. Because of the latitude of our country varying from 3°51′N to 53°33′N we always live under different weather and the environment require us to eat different kinds of food.

认真的说，我认为中国菜包含非常多的类别。我们有56个民族，所以每个民族的饮食都不一样。因为我们国家的纬度从北纬3度51分延伸到北纬53度33分，我们一直住在不同的气候中，不同的环境需要我们吃不同种类的食物。

So it is not easy to make a comment on Chinese food.

I think it’s worth noting that many people in China have traditionally only eaten food from their region and not so much of other regions’ foods although that is changing especially in the bigger cities.
As an American who lives in China (Tianjin) I love Chinese food! I loved it in America too but of course it’s really different there. I love both but if I had to choose I’d go with all the variety and freshness of “real” Chinese food. Although I do miss a good fried rice!

我认为值得注意的是，中国很多人只是传统的吃他们本地的菜，而不是其他地区的菜，虽然这正在变化，尤其是在大城市。

So far my only experience with Guangdong food has been in restaurants in other provinces. Looking forward to trying it there sometime soon. Although I do have to say I just returned from Shaanxi and loved its food more than Chongqing where I live.

My wife and I toured China last year an enjoyed it. One of the stories liked to tell was reading reviews before we left and someone complained there was too much Chinese food.

I never ate Chinese food until 2014 when I got with my now fiance. There’s a place on the other side of town run by a Chinese family who are always mostly open (except for when they return home to loved ones for a brief period of time) best.chinese.food.ever.

I think you mean ethnicities instead of nationalities. All those of mainland China have the same nationality or citizenship. But the people come from many different cultural groups.

I’m an American living in Tianjin China. I haven’t traveled around as much as I would like (I work too much) but I’ve absolutely LOVED exploring the different regional and local foods. Tianjin food is mostly a little bland and sweet for my taste but that’s not the point. (And Tianjin food now feels like “home cooking” to me so I’ve even come to be quite fond of it.) The diversity of flavors and ingredients here is absolutely mind-boggling! One more thing I love about living here….

This depends upon whether you have Chinese food at an American Chinese Restaurant (which is a “texmex” version of Chinese food) or have it in China. I enjoy both.

Everytime I eat Chinese food whether it is Cantonese Sichuan or Hunan I ALWAYS get sick. (…And Yes my reaction is the same no matter what dish I consume)

That being said my question is if I travel to China will the food upset my stomach as much as it bothers me here on the east coast of the US?

Most Chinese restaurants in USA serve bastardized food adjusted to American tastes but not all.

大部分在美国的中餐厅提供的都是迁就美式口味的“杂种”菜，也不是全部啦。

Like any large country the food from different regions is just that different.

While growing up in the NYC area of New Jersey our family went to excellent Cantonese restaurants.

The USA now has a wide range of terrible food establishments. Most of them pretending to offer ‘authentic’ Italian Middle Eastern Chinese hot dogs tacos etc. food. Everyone beware.

San Francisco used to have a restaurant that could compete with the best in China. Harbin restaurant seems to be closed. That is a real loss. I see people have posted its menu and are even selling matchbook covers from this gem. I once went there with a group of friends who had lived in China. They confirmed it was comparable to the best they had experienced inside the country.

Personally Chinese food when cooked well with good ingredients rivals Italian and even French food for the pinnacle of cuisine. All three cuisines are personal favorites. Nothing rivals a croissant or a pot sticker or a delicious pasta sauce.

In the USA we need to start eating a mediterranean diet for its health benefits. Getting clean food seems to be a problem most places but the food I ate in Northern Italy was both delicious and obviously clean and fresh in the way no food is in the USA.

In a way it IS easy - in all my travels to nearly every province I have never experienced a bad meal just different from one region to another though I cannot comment on such local county to county differences that until now I was unaware existed. I am American and enjoy the food immensely except chicken feet!

First of all if you talk about food in China you talk about ethnicity. When you just google this… you’ll be amazed. List of ethnic groups in China
So just try again how many types of food??? Its really unaccountable in modern standards. Chinese gastronomy is the most diverse and authentic in the world. And what sort of Chinese food I like? I love Chinese Mixed Rice - if the eatery prepares 10s of dishes dude its awesome you can just choose bits here and there and put it on your plate of rice. Its the most complete meal for an average Chinese person. I always have 2 veges 1 meat (of any kind) and soup.

首先，如果你在中国谈论食物，你就要谈到种族。但你只是google这个……你会被震惊。中国的种族群落清单。

It is all in the spices used. They eat beef chicken rice fish and noodles much as we do. They will eat anything as compared to Westerners who are a bit picky about what they eat. I have traveled all over that part of the world and I found that most of the food is entirely to spicy for me. My favorite place to eat was in Tibet and especially in Lhasa.

I've been to China many times over the last 15 years and have visited all the major provinces. I've eaten food from street vendors and at state dinners. In general I've found the food to be incredibly mediocre and bordering on horrible in many places. It's never a highlight of the trip. I much prefer the food in Malaysia Vietnam or Thailand.
