China has installed a massive field of solar panels on a particularly poignant site: a lake formed by the collapse of abandoned coal mines.

The world's largest floating solar project can produce enough power to light up a nearby city in China's eastern Anhui province. this is a clever idea. Solar panels like being cooler and water will keep the temperature on the cooler side. In many places a lake is part of a hydro dam so the power lines are already in place to connect to the grid. And when in the water they won't be subject to shading issues. The "ground" is already flat another problem which goes away with a lake. Lastly the shading panels provide can slow down evaporation from the lake which helps if its in a dry region. All in all there's a lot of upside in this sort of design.
