CINCINNATI (AP) — Otto Warmbier an American college student who was released by North Korea in a coma last week after almost a year and a half in captivity died Monday his family said.

The 22-year-old "has completed his journey home" relatives said in a statement. They did not cite a specific cause of death.

"Unfortunately the awful torturous mistreatment our son received at the hands of the North Koreans ensured that no other outcome was possible beyond the sad one we experienced today" his parents said.

Doctors had described his condition as a state of "unresponsive wakefulness" and said he suffered a "severe neurological injury" of unknown cause.

Smh remember back in the 90s when that American kid went over to Singapore with his family decided to act up and they caned his #$%$? That was SINGAPORE this was NORTH KOREA. If you're going to go abroad respect the reality that your antics might not be received as they would be in your country of origin. Good God watch the news ANY news. They are on an entirely different wavelength over there which is why it's so hard to get access. I don't even know what to say at this point. This didn't need to happen.

American's need to realize that other countries don't care about our "civil rights" and they really don't care about individual freedoms. Any American who goes abroad and thinks they can do all the same things they do here where everyone is treated like babies need to grow up fast. This person has only himself to blame for going to a country of crazy people and trying to be cute by stealing a poster.

Anyone who believes N Korea's story that this man went into a coma one month after the verdict is a fool. Do you really think N Korea has the ability or desire to keep him alive for over a year? More likely and tragically he was tortured or worked to death for that period of time until his heart gave out. When that happened they returned him. How awful for the parents. I don't believe he removed the poster either. They wanted to punish the US and he paid the price.

People were quick to say "he got what he deserved" when this story broke last year. But how many of us can say we did no foolish risky things when we were 19-20 years old. Otto certainly did not "deserve" to be tortured and brutally murdered for allegedly taking down a propaganda poster. And its a reminder how inhuman N.K. is to its own people. That regime cannot disappear from this planet fast enough they are a plague.
