I saw an interesting docu on the freedom fighters riders and one point that stuck with me is how the resistance to integration in the south when it became violent and ugly and was photographed and televised and shared with the rest of the country actually put the nail in the coffin of segregation. They lost that PR war the minute they started with the torches and pitchforks because nobody looks glorious and righteous when they are full of bitter hatred against people who are just calmly going WTF?! That's what I see happened here. These guys thought they were going to stir up a bunch of public support and make a real movement out of this but all they did was show their ugly faces to the world and now they lost. I think people were mostly indifferent to the statues here in NC and other places in the south but now there's a lot more support for taking them down.

You definitely hit on something here. There are still lots of people that support Trump and whose knee-jerk reaction is to believe what the President said that both groups of protesters deserve condemnation.
Then those same people see a right-wing protester waving a Nazi flag wearing a leather jacket with SS pins on CNN... all of a sudden they have an idea which side they're on... and it's not that one.

Black people in NC are not indifferent to the statues. They shouldn't be on public lands. We just avoid going to them and ignore them as much as possible. And yes it is unwelcoming but there is something about metal stone and flags that just feels permanent. Sadly. I actually try to avoid reading the descxtive plaques for fear it's going to be something that will ruin my day.
Nothing like paying taxes for the upkeep of something meant to keep you down.

Florida is going to be interesting. There are a shitload of Confederate memorials symbols etc. in Jacksonville and other places in north Florida. The farther south you go in Florida the fewer there are but as you point out Fort Myers/Lee County has its share -- and not just a courthouse painting but also a Lee memorial next to the parking garage across from the federal courthouse. (The Google street view photo shows two black men walking by it.) Even Miami has a Confederate memorial in the municipal City Cemetery.

Because we've been worn down and tired and accepted the status quo. There's so much to do and it's exhausting. That's why young people are leading this work.
North Carolina enjoyed some very thoughtful leadership for its time in the mid-to-late 20th century that frxd its response to civil rights as an economic one. We were told we could be separate but equal and all enjoy economic success as long as we didn't press too much or ask too many questions. It worked for a long time but those benefits did not trickle down to our kids.
They've got questions and nobody is really answering them. So now they are educating themselves. And they are not afraid nor do they believe in that dream we were sold.
Getting rid of the statues that are deeply offensive to so many is a good start.

I think it effects moderates too though I don't know what I consider myself anymore. Seeing Nazi's and KKK in the streets trying to keep those statues up... I mean I didn't want them up but I was just waiting for it to go through the channels now I want those statues torn down melted into jewish stars and other such things... and I am engaged to a history major so I know better. Seriously though when I saw a group of people tear down a civil war sculpture something that normally would make my stomach churn because I genuinely believe that they should be in a museum which will contextualize them I cheered. I don't know. Something deeply America woke up in me and started raging and while normally I try to be a peaceful person I believe this sort of situation requires a truly American response. The revolutionaries dumped tea into the ocean the current US revolutionaries tear down racist statues and put the fear of AMERICA into dirty white nationalist thinking they are safe to stand on the stairs of a city where one of their members just committed a terrorist attack and be forced to flee in terror.

FYI 99% of those statues have zero historical significance and don't belong in a museum. They were cheaply mass-produced during the middle of the 20th century and sold to any Southern town that would buy to protest against the Civil Rights movement. There are tens of thousands of them many of which sit in towns that had nothing to do with the Civil War if they even existed then. The statues are as brittle hollow cheap and common as dollar store "chocolate" bunnies with a few exceptions such as Richmond's monument row or Stone Mountain in Atlanta. Your average rural Alabama county seat's Confederate Lenin statue has about as much to do with Civil War history as a 99￠ rebel flag bumper sticker and the world will lose just as much when they're toppled as it would if you bit into the aformentioned fake chocolate bunny.

I grew up in the South and previously bought the 'history not hate' line.
Right now I'm of the opinion history is important but it belongs in a museum. And it's clearly being used as a rallying point for hate groups. Confederate statues and flags in civic areas need to go.
