Why do people make fun of Chinese people but not Japanese, Korean, or Vietnamese people?

I think it has a lot to do with ignorant people thinking that the only asians in the world are Chinese. In the western world, China is like the unelected representative of Asia. It has a lot to do with China having the biggest population of course, but not enough to be considered the typical Asian in my opinion. ( And by that, I mean less than half of Asians are Chinese, so not the majority) People really don't think about Japan or Korea or Vietnam when they are talking about Asia in general unless the topic is specifically on those countries, so it has a lot to do with stereotypes. I mean, people don't really consider Russians as Asians, but a large part of Russia is in Asia, and nobody really classifies India as Asian, they clasifiy them as, well Indians. So when people make fun of Chinese, you should know they are making fun of Vietnamese and Japanese and Koreans altogether, just without saying it. That's why I get offended when people at my school say stuff like “Ching Chong Wing Wong, I'm a Chinese”, even though I'm Vietnamese, and thats because I know they aren't really just talking about the Chinese, they are offending Asians altogether.

although it seems like only chinese are target, I assure in the eyes of someone who throws such remarks they do not differentiate asians apart. All asians are the same to them, Its just that chinese ones have a larger presence. So when Ching chong, or chink are thrown out, that person could be vietnamese and they wouldn’t care.

this is a complex question. but the Chinese population is huge and just like how it is “okay” to make fun of White people in the USA, the global size of China has a similar effect. another side effect of being so big is that it is very difficult to modernize the entirety of the country, which is why there is both the stereotype of the rich chinese spoiled kid, hard working chinese young business person, and country side bumpkin who poops on the grass at disneyland.
Korea and Japan are not nearly as large in terms of population, almost the entire population lives in big huge cities and thus the entierty becomes fairly modernized.
Another reason is politics. everything is made in China, so “they took our jobs!” mentality comes into the poor people in the USA who want someone to blame. Also the USA helped Japan more than any other asian country after WW2, They fought against Japanese and saw skillful soilders, and during the Korean war the same thing happened, then again in Vietnam. It is deep seeded in the minds of the previous generations of Americans how tough these countries are in particular. Actually it is a trait of Asian countries, but simply, these countries had exposure to the USA, as the USA never went to war in China. The previous generations grew up to be directors, polititians, celebrities, people of influence, etc. and established through this, what is socially acceptable and what is not.

I’ll base my answer on the assumption that your experience is that of a person with a western background.
I agree with Ming Chen and Yves Shen in that people are more likely to make fun of the Chinese because they have such a large presence around the world.
However, I would also say that China’s past also has some effect on people’s desire to ridicule them. I think that people ridicule the Chinese instead of Koreans, the Japanese, or the Vietnamese because China has a history of disagreeing with western governments.
China went through some rough times in the 19th century when western countries tried their hands at expanding their influence in China so that they could extract wealth at the expense of Chinese locals and government. The Chinese were not too happy with this as shown by their various wars with and (unsuccessful) rebellions against said western countries during that time period; however, the Chinese were never completely colonized or occupied by the western countries. I believe that this quasi-colonization of China allowed the Chinese to keep their identity while the western countries believed that they were changing the Chinese to fit western values.
With the expulsion of the pro-western government and the establishment of a socialist government, the western countries that had invested so much time and effort into changing China more or less lost all of their investments. Most people aren’t too fond of losing investments, and to add salt to injury, the new government was established during the Cold War, so not only did western countries dislike the new China for not wanting to be influenced by them anymore but also because they were now seen as a real threat to western society (for being socialist).
When governments don’t agree, they tend to act fairly bitter to one another; as a result, westerners during the Cold War (especially 50s and 60s) grew up with governments that would slander China because they didn’t agree with it. This whole disagreement leading to bitterness also explains why people don’t make fun of Koreans, the Japanese, or the Vietnamese: westerners agreed with these groups of people. The west played a huge role in rebuilding Korea and Japan and trying to keep Vietnam from becoming communist (Vietnam is a bit tricky because they, like the Chinese, were seen as against the west; however, they also had a large amount of refugees settle in the US so people got to experience them first hand and feel sympathetic towards them)
In short, China was bullied by western governments in the 19th century until they finally struck back in the 20th century. This striking back led to western governments disliking and slandering China. Korea, Japan, and Vietnam all received huge amounts of help from western countries during the 20th century and are therefore seen as friends whom are not to be insulted. Years later, we’re still dealing with the effects of governments disagreeing with each other and pitting their people against one another.
