The world’s biggest canal project – a $50bninteroceanic canal through Nicaragua– has beendelayed, following an environmental report and a collapse in the fortunes of theChinese businessman behind the company that planned to build it.

Why is the canal necessary? I doubt Panamawould be allowed to close theirs and it's 100 km shorter and already there.

Foreign investment doesn't have to be a badthing. It can be a win win situation. In the case of Nicaragua, the question shouldn'tbe investing or not but what foreign investment to prefer, an american,european or for that matter a chinese one.

Not true. How do you think the Panama Canal was built? It was US like for 20 years orso, and then it passes to Panama.
This canal will be the same, first will bechinese and then, in 20-30 years or so, it will be Nicaraguan...
It is a nice boost to Nicaraguan economy.

I've lived in Nicaragua,and I now live in Panama.
I'd love to see the same kind of prosperityin Nicaraguathat I see here, but aside from the question of environmental damage, I wonderhow much of that wealth would really benefit the average Nicaraguan.

One concern not fully addressed is the sealevel canal. What is to prevent some marine species migrating from the Atlantic to the Pacific and vice versa. I know the lakeis fresh water but if it is at sea level wouldn't the oceans overwhelm it andturn it brackish? It could be an ecological disaster.

There is already a lot of transferrence ofspecies through the Panama canal and as for "ecological disaster" - China's wealthis predicated on ecological "disasters". They are not really atree-hugging nation.
