After Germany was beaten down, German women had two choices: suck up to Americans or be raped by Russians. There were no other choices. Did they genuinely like being ravaged by the enemy? No. But which of the two choices presented to an 8 year old girl or and 80 year old woman would you suggest they take with your perfect hindsight?

It was a tricky business for German women, but given that many were desperate for food and protection, and given that most likely their husbands or boyfriends were never coming home again, finding a friendly GI for either temporary comfort and protection, or even for marriage, was a pretty easy choice to make.
Of course, there were consequences at time. Some GIs and their German girl friends were attacked in public by German men.
The best choice for a German woman was to find the protection of an American or British officer.
Many German women suffered a grim fate. While it’s true that many of them gleefully saluted their Fuhrer a few years earlier, I think for others the payback was rather harsh indeed.
We have some films about this, from American photographers, and they’re interesting. In some cases, Americans are warned in training films not to “fraternize with the enemy—Germans are not your friend!” but….lots of luck enforcing THAT. Other films do show German women clearing streets and expressing their dislike of being filmed, with some rather rude gestures. Some just hide their faces.

Yes, many were. In Colonel David Hackworth’s autobiography, About Face, he recounts in passing stories of many US GIs in the occupation forces who were (how should I put this?) “romantically ambitious” and easily found and maintained two or more girlfriends. (Hackworth even tells the story of one GI who tossed flyers from a small airplane or helicopter with his name and contact information to attract more possibilities, before the GI’s CO put a stop to it.) And there were apparently a large number of marriages resulting from the situation.
You have to recognize a few factors. With all the battlefield deaths, especially on the Eastern Front, the German male-to-female ratio was severely skewed. There were some rapes committed by GIs, but nowhere near as many as in the area occupied by the Soviet army, so there was considerably less anger and hatred between the German population and the occupying force. Further, for at least a couple years starvation was widespread in Germany, so many German women took whatever assistance they could find. Lastly, the American government and some civilian charitable groups sent food to Germany to ease the starvation and we took steps to help the Germans rebuild their nation.
I've read, possibly right here on Quora, that a similar situation obtained earlier while the war was still in progress, between POWs of the western allies of enlisted rank and German women. The Germans observed the Geneva Convention regarding soldiers of the western militaries, which allows using enlisted POWs for nonmilitary employment, often farm work. The GI would find himself alone with the home front woman managing the family farm, one thing would lead to another, and ….
Regarding Hackworth’s book, I strongly recommend it. He was an intelligent man and tells a lot of interesting stories. He was the consummate soldier who served in Korea and Vietnam, and spoke out against the War in Vietnam while still in uniform. Regarding the title, it self-acknowledges Hackworth’s personal change from a highly decorated combat soldier (with, IIRC, eighty-five medals for courage under fire) to one against the War in Vietnam, particularly the inept way he believed it was being conducted, and an antinuclear activist). FWIW, I've heard this referred to in spiritual circles as “an extreme turning to its opposite,” although later in his life he acted as a journalist, and visited and gave moral support to American troops in combat areas.

Ever heard about the mass rape in Germany done by American and Soviet troops?
One of the most famous cases is the mass rape in Berlin.
Apparently when the soviet troops arrived in Berlin (followed by American troops) they raped most of the females in Berlin aging from 10 to 60. And that’s just the situation in Berlin.
Some girls were raped more than 10 times in a single day. Even many young women soldiers and medical staff in the Red Army did not appear to disapprove. "Our soldiers' behaviour towards Germans, particularly German women, is absolutely correct!" said a 21-year-old from Agranenko's reconnaissance detachment.
Though to be fair much of the rapes were done by the soviets but still at least half of the American troops also participated in the gang rapes through out Germany. American media makes it seem like ALL of the rapes were done only and only by the soviet troops whereas American troops were being all nice and friendly to the Germans. Though evidence says that there wasn’t much difference in terms of war crimes committed between East and West Germany following post world war.
The rapes had affected women in households across Berlin. A German survivor Ingeborg Bullert recalls that women between the ages of 15 and 55 were ordered to get tested for sexually transmitted diseases. "You needed the medical certificate to get the food stamps and I remember that all the doctors doing these certificates, had waiting rooms full of women."
What was the scale of the rapes? The most often quoted number is a staggering 100,000 women in Berlin and two million on German territory. That figure - hotly debated - was extrapolated from scant surviving medical records.
Some victims reports even claim that American soldiers participated in upto 190,000 rapes during the Germany invasion and in the US occupied West Germany. Most of the assaults taking place in months immediately following the the US invasion of Nazi germany. There was also a fake propaganda that the German women were attracted to American GI’s further encouraging the behaviour.
Also It's hard to find direct evidence of how the German soldiers treated Russian women - many victims never survived - but in the German-Russian Museum in Berlin, director Jorg Morre showed a photograph to a BBC news reporter taken in Crimea from a German soldier's personal wartime album. A woman's corpse is sprawled on the ground.
"It looks like she was killed by raping, or after the rape. Her skirt is pulled up and the hands are in front of the face," he says.
During world war 2, a lot of war crimes happened. And America, Germany and Soviet Russia are all guilty of committing tons of war crimes but American outlook that all the crimes were committed by Russians isn’t right. Their soldiers too were guilty.
All many western media outlets reports that German people welcomed the allied warmly are mostly bullshit. Western media is pretty good at blaming other countries for the crimes they committed. No country would welcome another countries troops when they come marching down into their city.
But it’s always the winners who writes history.

German women were starving after WW2 as the currency entirely lost its value and the country was rubble. I don’t know about the whole country, but in the French occupation zone, Allied troops went from house to house and destroyed people’s private food stores before the winter of 1946.
It was part of a plan to prevent an uprising by starving people until they were physically too weak to resist.
The average food consumption of Germans during this time was 1000 calories a day. Try living on that for a month. If you manage, try doing it for 6 during a cold winter without any heating.
In the cities where people couldn’t grow any food, many women and young girls sold themselves to American (and other Allied) troops for food for themselves or their children on a daily basis. The most successful ones became mistresses or war brides. The same happened in Italy to a degree.
Some widows permanently abandoned their children to become war brides. I have met some of those children.
These women were shunned by German society during and afterward.
I wouldn’t call it “friendliness”. It was survival. Exploitation of women and girls’ survival instinct to extort sex.
Any modern liberal would be more than comfortable calling it mass rape, followed by Stockholm syndrome.
Of course you won’t find people complaining, because if those soldiers had had more integrity, those women and girls would have simply died instead.

The real question is: “Were American troops friendly to German women?”
And the sure answer to that question is “no”.
When US soldiers arrived in Germany, they were walking down the street with placards on which they had written: "Willst du mit mir schlafen" (Do you want to sleep with me) or "Schlaf mit mir" (Sleep with me).
The local population was horrified!
Of course, it is well-known the Soviets were not any better! ⬇️

Quick answer. Yes. There were a lot of German war brides. i.e. German women who married US Soldiers who were stationed in Germany. Although we certainly had a share of jerks who took advantage of their “conquering hero” position, the vast majority behaved themselves. They had access to food, cigarettes, coffee that Germans had not seen for years. This enabled them to build friendships that became relationships and often ended in marriage.

It depends on whether you regard being raped en masse as friendly.
Americans herded several million German POWs into open air concentration camps, basically fields with razor wire, starved a lot of them, and starved the women in the cities. Women wiling to sell their bodies to the Americans were paid with food.
Most people would rightly consider that rape.
The only thing in the favor of the Americans is that they didn't butcher and mutilate the women after raping them as was the case with many Soviet units in April and May of 1945.

Some were.
Some needed food (Germans got little over starvation rations after the war) and were willing to prostitute themselves for food.
Some got raped and where left with food because then the American soldier could pretend it was not rape.
