CANBERRA, Australia (AP) -- A German executive vying for a lucrative Australian submarine contract on Thursday said that awarding the contract to Japan could damage Australia's relationship with China.

German's ThysennKrupp Marine Systems, Japan's Mitsubishi and French company DCNS are in the running to build 12 conventional submarines that the Australian navy expects will cost at least 56 billion Australian dollars ($43 billion). The government expects to award the contract this year, with Japan regarded as a favorite early in the bidding process due to its close military relationship with Australia and the Unites States.

Sounds like Germany is a little jelly. No disrespect for German engineering or Germany itself, but it just makes more sense for Japan to build the submarines for Australia. It would benefit both nations economically, politically, and militarily. Something to note about the German exec's comment about Australia choosing Japan over Germany to build its submarine fleet for it: Why do you think Australia is building such a large sub fleet? The answer is the common denominator that both Japan and Australia share whereas Germany could care less. Japan and Australia have more at stake with a rising aggressive China than Germany does thousands of miles away.

Australia should buy the Japanese submarines because this will help the Japanese to fund their own rearmament program in order to confront the Chinese military expansion. If the deal is purely commercial, then the Germans have a point. But it's not purely commercial. It's military.

Australia needs to get off the China teet and grow a pair. Perhaps the decision to purchase from Japan is a start. My question is why aren't they purchasing frm the only country that can possibly keep them free by providing a military defense that they can't possibly provide on their own - The same country that saved their assets in WW2 - The United States of America.
