China's People's Liberation Army airforce - a co-producer of the film - has also chipped in, lending the productionsome of its most advanced fighting tools.

Orville Schell, a China expert who has been studying the countrysince the days of Mao Zedong, said he had been stunned, and troubled, by Xi'smuscle-flexing parades.

In doing so,it has also sparked what one newspaper called "a fever for military-themedTV and film productions".

Wolf Warrior 2 tells the story of Leng Feng, a musclebound,child-saving, grenade-lobbing, beer-guzzling, tank-racing Adonis described bycritics as a Chinese fusion of Die Hard's John McClane, Rambo, Jason Bourne and24's Jack Bauer.

Leng, a former member of China's "Wolf Warrior" specialforces unit, finds himself flying the Chinese flag in a fictitious and failingAfrican state that is battling a rebel uprising and a mysterious, flesh-eatingvirus.

Get fucking used to it," the Americansoldier of fortune tells Leng during one of the film's final blood-soakedbattle scenes, as he prepares to puncture the Chinese hero's throat with arazor-sharp knuckleduster.

Jonathan Papish, an industry expert from China Film Insider, saidpatriotic movies were nothing new in China: studios had been churning outso-called "main melody films" ever since Mao seized power in 1949.

But the chest-thumping patriotism on show in Wolf Warrior 2 was"definitely a product of Xi's reign and the idea of therejuvenation".

"It is a China that won't take shit from other countries,that won't be bullied," he said. "It's the mentality that the 100years of oppression from foreign powers is over and we are now in a phase whereChina can stand on its own feet and defend itself and its citizens. The generalpopulation ... is very proud of the role that China can play now."

Zhou, the Chinese critic, agreed the blockbuster had surfed a waveof patriotism to box office success. "Of course, the big geopoliticalpicture of China's rise … definitely helped the film," he said. "Themovie skyrocketed because it has this patriotic message."

Instead, Zhou attributed the success of Wolf Warrior 2 and anotherrecent hit called Operation Mekong to a 21st century Chinese thirst forentertainment. "[Chinese people] are exhausted after a day's work. Theyhave a lot of pressure in life. So when they go to the cinema they say: 'Wedon't want a history lesson. We don't want an experience that is similar tositting in a classroom. We don't want to be educated. We just want to beentertained.' At this stage of economic development it's quiteunderstandable."

周把《战狼2》和另一部电影《湄公河行动》的成功归结为21世纪中国人对娱乐的渴求。“（中国人）一天工作后筋疲力尽。他们在生活中有很多压力。所以当他们走进电影院的时候会说：我们不想上什么历史课，我们不想做在电影院里跟坐在教室里似的。我们不想接受教育。我们只想享受娱乐。当经济发展到这种程度的时候人们的这种想法是可以理解的。”

There is certainly little educational about Wolf Warrior 2. Withits giraffes, lions, rebel fighters and mass graves, it offers as hackneyed avision of Africa as any to emerge from Hollywood.

"Africa," muses Leng. "Great food. Nice scenery.Hot women."

Ultimately, though, the film is about China, and its growingmight, not Africa. When Big Daddy attacks the Chinese factory, General Aotu,the rebel chief, reprimands him. "I told you so many fucking times that wecannot kill the Chinese," he rages. "China is a permanent member ofthe UN security council and I need them on my side if I am to take politicalpower."

Big Daddy is unimpressed. He stabs him in the throat. But beforelong, China returns to save the day. People's Liberation Army warshipsannihilate the mercenaries with a barrage of guided missiles. With the coastclear, China's Rambo leads a convoy of grateful African women and children andChinese factory workers to safety, China's red flag wrapped around his arm. Asmiling African child places a mint in Leng's mouth as they flee.

Sceptics have dismissed Wolf Warrior 2 as thinly veiled propagandafor Xi Jinping and his "China dream".

But the film-makers behind this new wave of patriotic films insistthey are following a well-trodden path. "America makes movies that promotethe American spirit," Wu Jing, the director-cum-actor who plays Leng Feng,told reporters. "Why can't I do that for China?"

Michael Bay films are currently top of the heapfor jingoistic God-Bless-America nonsense - and they're critically slated andattacked everywhere.
Nobody likes patriotism shoved in their faces - and especiallywhen it's 'patriotism' for another country, probably especially America.
Patriotism, as the old saying goes, is the last refuge of ascoundrel - just as we criticise the Bloody Yanks for their particularlyinedible brand of patriotism, I think it's only fair if China - or Russia, orBritain, or Anyone - also gets a healthy dose of criticism against theirparticular brand of bombastic, simplistic nationalism-driven patriotism too. Ifyou still say nobody criticises American patriotic films, you're either aChinabot or you really, Really haven't been paying attention.

Do people really criticise Michael Bay's films for its jingoism orbecause they are just really bad films?
What about things like Forrest Gump, Bond, American Assassin,Saving Private Ryanair, Rocky 4, Captain America etc? Don't think I've everseen any criticism levelled at them.
Maybe you need to pay some attention.
China are releasing their jingoistic films to only the Chinesemarket and not trying to shove them down others countries throats,unlike theBritish and American films. That's the difference.

China is merely playing a catch up or imitation from a well knownalready established master of this game of using cinema to fire up militarypatriotism and exceptionalism. The united states, it's easy to pass US'sridiculous many patriotic movies since they are democracy and "free".It's one of my critique of America's cinema.
US already cracked this and made tons of it for decades..Well ofcourse they need young fired up pawns todo the job of the empire. That's the thing, USdo this so covertly that we let it pass. However the difference and sadthing is, it is not China that had been involved in the many wars. It's theUS.......... People only realise these things when the other side does the samething which in this case is China.. Oh China had copied so many things fromUSA. Add the drones on that one which they currently sell some to Saudi Arabiaas an example. Which USA also had already been doing far earlier... USA aninnovator to perpetuating conflicts, arms selling industry and infusingmilitary patriotism into pop culture and entertainment. There's a reason whyUSA don't do military parades. It is because they do propaganda covertly andeffectively...

China's military is bigger than that of Russia, though perhapsonly equal in effectiveness.
America likes to kill, but can't take casualties and has nevercome close to those of China and Russia in past conflicts. That's why on KoreaAmerica failed to beat Mao's primitive peasant army sometimes only armed withpitchforks.

China has bad air and most Chinese don't spend English, Tomprefers to stay in his five star hotel room or at the lobby bar writing storieswith material he found on the internet or obtained by chatting with otherwestern expats.
It used to work perfectly but nowadays it seems the readers areless happy with his stories.

Tom Phillips should work for the Mirror. Then the Mirror storytellers are at least more interesting.
The Guardian infrequently produces quality reports about China,but never by Tom and the guy who stations in Hong Kong.
One would think as the most populous country and the secondlargest economy (largest in terms of PPP and manufacturing), China has peoplewho are not clowns and who are doing something of substance.

Dear Tom, I’ve always found that politics in democracy world isjust a collection of shit, Brits and US in particular, but it never boring;same can’t be said of your take of a simple-plotted action flick: a salad ofwords, hence rather a shame for where original “House of Cards” and modern daysatire “Black Mirror” were made. Take my advice, when in Rome, let“it” go and prepared to be amused.
