Polish politicians have given the green light to a bill to criminalise statements which suggest Poland bears responsibility for crimes committed by Nazi Germany.
Phrases such as “Polish death camps” would be made a criminal offence, punishable by up to three years in prison or a fine.
The bill will also make it illegal to deny the murder of around 100,000 Poles by units in the Ukrainian Insurgent Army during the Second World War.
It still needs to be approved by Poland’s Senate and president.
Officials argue phrases such as “Polish death camps” suggest Poland is at least partly to blame for the camps in which millions of people, the majority Jewish, were killed by Nazi Germany.
The camps were established and operated by the Nazis after Poland was invaded in 1939.
Deputy justice minister Patryk Jaki told state news agency PAP: “Non-governmental organisations indicate that every other day the phrase ‘Polish death camps’ is used around the world.
“In other words, German Nazi crimes are attributed to Poles.
“And so far the Polish state has not been able to effectively fight these types of insults to the Polish nation.”
Critics say the law would have a stifling effect on debating history and freedom of expression within Poland.

Poland's new law criminalizes truth tellers and rewrites history. So how is it any different from Israel's law to censure any mention of the Nakba?

"truth tellers" ? who is f...truth tellers?

Whilst this will probably just wind up the nationalistic & antisemitic, it does seem to me to be a very fair article on this topic

Whydid you expelled those pour people from England in 1290 ?
The Edictof Expulsion wasa royal decree issued by King EdwardI of England on18 July 1290, expelling all Jews from the Kingdomof England. The expulsion edict remained in force for the rest of the MiddleAges. The edict was not an isolated incident, but the culmination of over200 years of increased persecution.

Well, if you'd like me to say that I abhor the actions of medi monarchs 700+ years ago, then I'm happy to do so. An awful act, and one that frequently surprised pupils when they learned about it. But it was rescinded when England was a republic under Cromwell in the 17th century, and other discriminatory laws against Jews (& other groups such as Catholics) were abolished in the 19th century. Remember Benjamin Disraeli, born Jewish, was PM in the 1860s & 1870s. It's a shame other European countries were so much later in ridding themselves of antisemitism.

I understand the slippery slope argument point that Poland shouldn't be accused of masterminding the death camps/the genocide that occurred in their country - it was obviously the occupying power of Nazi Germany who brutalised the Polish people. However, criminalising the phrase "Polish death camp" feels a bit difficult to enforce, as it is unfortunately geographically accurate regarding location today. If I wanted to visit unfortunately geographically accurate regarding location to learn about Nazi crimes there, I would have to go to Poland, not Germany (I am grateful to Poland for preserving this memory for the world to learn the lessons of the Holocaust). I fear it would be very difficult to enforce a ban on a phrase which might be meant in a context of geography, and not intended to confer guilt. The other problem I have is the slippery slope argument - what happens if one wants to research how certain Polishbehaved during the war, including if there were collaborators (i.e. traitors to Poland)? Would this law criminalise this also?

German Nazis crimes... you are proof how easy is to forget about that. Especially as German press likes to call Polish nationalists Nazi god knows why...sic!) There was no brutralizing polish people- they weren't working there- only
Poles collaborating with Germans were traitors and it was penatilized.
And...in Poland there is no place called Auswitz-Birkenau.
That place fully belongs to Germans.
In Poland places have't got German names.
We'd need to read the actual legal act, not its interpretation in media. I see it is specific to this phrase describing incorrectly the camps. Any researcher can still investigate specific crimes and behaviors during WWII and share a nationality of offenders. The law was put in place as each year there are 50-100 cases of this historically untrue phrase in TVs and newspapers, even as big as German national TV, ZDF. While the law applies to Poland only anyway, it sends a stronger message how untrue the phrase is.

Prior to German occupation the Jewish population was being persecuted by the Poles!
Mj0979
And while the hostility happened for <20 years in pre-WWII Poland, persecution and killings happened for centuries all over Europe before that, hence following your logic, you blame all Europe, do you?

ok what to do with German Death camps? just want to remind you Polish people suffered most, and if you knew the history a bit you would understand that some idiots are in this world, always been, unfortunately few Poles hated Jews and blamed them for the WWII tragedy. but even this tragedy in Kielce was a result of german occupation and that was the result of what GERMANS did to us. if it was no war, if germans didnt invaded Poland, then it would be no KIELCE POGROM!!!!
