First of all China is not a superpower in the traditional sense. However it is a major power, as is Russia.

India’s population will to match China’s around 2025 and then will proceed to become the world’s most populated country. However being a power on the world stage is not about population numbers. Russia has a population of less then 150 million people but a powerful military and carries a lot of influence in certain parts of the world.

China is not a superpower, not yet anyways and not likely for the foreseeable future. The only real superpower in currently defined terms is the US and it will be for awhile longer. Only the US can project its economic and military power globally.

Population is a huge resource and it needs to be used efficiently. Education and equal opportunities have to be present at all levels.

It has to be united in common goals, regardless of language or religion to build an equal and just society. Upon which prosperity and progress can be created and maintained. (Paraphrased from Singapore’s national pledge. But it is unlikely we'll be a superpower :))

A population like China’s or India’s with the right national policies and stability being a future superpower is a strong possibility.

Superpower status is not decided on the basis of population. If that was the case China would already be a super power. In fact the more population one country has, more resources are required to support them and keep them productive.

Superpower status comes with the economic muscle, and the weapon systems it has to defend itself. The better the infrastructure and fully developed the better its chances are to become a super power, where the country has the resources to help develop other countries and thereby influence them to gather under their umbrella. More friends and support you have in the world community, along with muscle and economic power the stronger you become. Also the size and economy is directly dependent upon the size of market a country has. The bigger the market, bigger is its influence on others, thereby making it a superpower.

超级大国的地位不是由人口来决定的。如果是的话，中国已经是一个超级大国了。事实上，一个国家的人口越多，就需要更多的资源来供养他们以及保持他们的生产力。

Population does not equal development. Many of the developed countries have a very small population. If India surpasses China’s population, that will not mean anything if those people are not educated or healthy.
