Orin Laney, lives in Silicon Valley

Depends on your point of view. Indians tend to cluster in the more technical areas, Chinese spread out to include marketing and nontechnical stuff. So, the answer varies with the enterprise.

From the 1960’s and 1970’s, “engineering” in Silicon Valley meant hardware - i.e. electronics from wires to microchips. Intel was king. AMD was queen. In those days, foreign engineers were mostly Japanese. But in the 1980’s, when you said “engineering” suddenly you meant software - not hardware. That’s when the demographics of Silicon Valley changed from Japanese to Indian, which is still the same today. When the internet became public (it had belonged to the DoD) the languages that built it were quickly developed into the java-based system we see today. Java engineers from India have become indispensable. As data became bigger and bigger (ask Oracle) the need for DB engineers was critical. As an Indian java engineer once quipped to me, “Baby boys in India are born with an Oracle DBA on their foreheads.” As for the Chinese, they are here, but not in nearly the numbers as Indians.
