BEIJING: China expects the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation to play a key role in resolving the differences between India and Pakistan, which joined the organisation last year.

北京：中国希望上海合作组织在解决印度和巴基斯坦的分歧方面发挥关键作用。

“We know there are existing and historical unresolved conflicts between Pakistan and India,” Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi said on Monday in an interview with CGTN, the country’s national broadcaster. “But I think after they joined the SCO, maybe we can provide a better platform and opportunities for the building of relations between them.”

中国外交部长王毅周一在接受印度国家广播公司CGTN采访时表示:“我们知道，巴基斯坦和印度之间存在着当代和历史未决的冲突。但我认为，在他们加入上海合作组织后，中国或许可以为他们之间的关系建设提供更好的平台和机遇。”

The statement is significant because Prime Minister Narendra Modi had indicated on Sunday that Pakistan was a major stumbling block in the improvement of relations between India and China.

这一声明意义重大，因为印度总理纳伦德拉•莫迪周日曾表示，巴基斯坦是改善中印关系的主要障碍物。

Speaking at the first SCO summit after India joined the organisation in the Chinese coastal city of Qingdao, Modi said infrastructure programmes should take into account the need to “respect the sovereignty” of member states . He was referring to the fact that China’s Belt and Road Initiative passes through Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. India also became the only SCO member to refuse to endorse the BRI which was backed by Russia, Pakistan and Central Asian countries.

在印度加入上海合作组织后参与的首次峰会上，莫迪表示，基建项目应该考虑到成员国“尊重主权”的必要性。他指的是中国的“一带一路”项目通过了巴基斯坦占领的克什米尔地区。印度也成为唯一拒绝签署该条约的成员国，该条约得到了俄罗斯、巴基斯坦和中亚国家的支持。

Wang said all SCO members have taken pledges about maintaining good relations with other members. He described the SCO as a “great vehicle” for improving ties between India and Pakistan.

Afghanistan’s stability is the top regional security issue for the organisation because it is a neighbour to most SCO members, the minister said.
