‘The most powerful franchise in America’ is how one trader described Apple after it passed the $800bn market cap mark.

Apple has become the first company in history to top the $800bn mark in market capitalisation slightly more than two years after it crossed the $700bn threshold.

The iPhone maker’s shares have gained 33% this year and almost 50% since the US election in November. Shares closed at $153.99 on Tuesday.

The company represents about 4% of the $21.7 trillion that makes up the entire S&P 500 index which itself hit an all-time intra-day high on Tuesday of 2403.87.

You'd noticed that too? Nine times out of ten if I see a broken screen its on an iPhone. Why is that? Poor design or the owner unwilling to spend another fortune on replacement iPhone? Or perhaps its because iPhone owners sell their old handsets on leaving themselves without the back-up handset many Android users have?

For me the shares are overpriced more than the products. They're not making effective use of their >$250bn cash pile. It's sitting there idle and that's an enormous waste of resources. The iPhone 7 is unexciting; most iPhone 5 and 6 users won't bother upgrading to it ditto the latest macbook pro with its underwhelming gimicky touchbar.
They've lost the balls to come up with something revolutionary that they enjoyed in the Jobs era; now they're frozen with a smugness that comes from sitting on the pile. You don't sit at the top without continuously fighting for it and it looks like Apple are running out of ideas.
