The United States mistakenly supported China’s membership of the World Trade Organisation in 2001 on terms that have failed to force Beijing to open its economy, the Trump administration has said.

While the US trade representative’s office has long taken China to task for unfair trade practices, the first such review under Donald Trump’s presidency takes a harsher tone against Beijing.

The problem is that Chinese workers are happy working for a much lower salary than US workers and still can belong to the consumer society. Now that Chinese manufacturing is so efficient, they can undercut US prices. To Trump that's unfair - to China it's natural.

Your comparison of Chinese and US wages for manufacturing workers is 10 years out of date. Wages for trade qualified workers in the US are largely higher than in China however for semiskilled workers the comparisons are far more equal. Well paid process workers in China earn more than poorly paid workers in the US so, largely, it is roughly even especially given local purchasing power parity.

The PRC's markets are not open & free & the PRC's refusal to play by the rules is having a deleterious effect on the US and other countries who do generally try to play by the rules. Too fucking bad. The US made its bed when its corporate class wanted cheap goods and higher profit margins when they moved industries to China. And the dim-witted and greedy US population cheered it on because of their addiction to cheap goods. Meanwhile, China suffered severe pollution in return, and is the dumping ground for recyclables from so-called "green" European countries. Trump and the US want to have the cake and eat it.
