Hundreds of thousands of people in China have begun travelling from major cities to their smaller hometowns for celebrating the upcoming Lunar New Year with their families.

成千上万中国人开始从大城市返乡，他们将与家人一起庆祝即将到来的农历新年。

The epic holiday travel rush, billed as the world's largest annual human migration, started today and is expected to last 40 days until March 12.

这一堪称史诗般的人口流动，被誉为世界最大规模的人口迁移。春运从今天开始，一直持续到3月12日，共计40天。

A total of 2.98 billion trips would be made by the 1.4 billion Chinese citizens during the period by train, bus and air, according to China Central Television Station. Each British resident would have to make 45 trips to reach the same number.

据中国央视报道，整个春运期间，通过乘坐火车，搭乘巴士，坐飞机，14亿中国人将总共出行29.8亿人次。

为了达到这一出行规模，英国每一位公民得出行45次才行。

The staggering travel season comes into being as millions of Chinese people who live, work or study away from their hometown try to reunite with their family for China's most important traditional holiday, the Chinese New Year or Lunar New Year.

数以百万计在城里生活、工作和学习的中国人返乡，与家人团聚，一起度过中国最重要的传统节日——中国农历新年。

Also known as the Spring Festival, the festival falls on February 16 this year.

农历新年也被称为春节，今年的春节是2月16日这一天。

The Chinese rail authority is expecting to send 390 million passengers this year during the 40-day period, which is more than the entire population of the United States and six times the population of the United Kingdom.

春运期间，中国铁路局预计发送3.9亿人次的旅客，比美国人口还多，是英国人口的6倍。
