China confirms ban of Australian coal imports

The art of war, written 2,500 years ago, is still read in military colleges around the world. The weapons we fight with have changed in that time. Tactics, logistics, and strategy? not so much.

Do they preserve their traditionally strong card of national security and keep a public, hard stance against cyber China? Or do they pander to their donors and mates in the coal lobby and soften language towards China?

Pea brain: The coal ban has nothing to do with diplomatic tensions.
Normal brain: The coal ban is the Chinese applying financial pressure to achieve political aims.
Big brain: The coal ban is not broad enough to be effective, thus it is more of a threat than an actual attack, and a threat that they are unlikely to make good on given their reliance on imported energy.
Galaxy brain: Actually, the coal ban is good because the coal industry is bad and needs to die to meet our climate goals.

Sorry but that isn't the case, Australian coal on average will release less C02 per unit of energy than it's Russian, Indonesian or China counterpart. This is not good at all for the world, it's bad for Austalia's economy and even worse for the world global emissions and Chinese citizens themselves.

Hmmm... you are right about the CO2, although reading the article again it says that this mainly affects coking coal, which has to be high grade.

Does that factor in the emissions from shipping the coal from australian mine to chinese power plant?
The shitty fuel that most shipping tankers burn is some of the most polluting fossil fuels around, and those ships burn a metric fuckton of it an hour.

Yes. Bulk transport to China uses less energy than the 50km of rail transport to port.

Except they are pretty aware of the effects of smog and pollution at this point. Why wouldn’t they just go renewables?

[–]aussielander -1 6
Because coal is much cheaper, it's not my decision, the guys that makes billions out of this are calling the shots.

China is literally the world's biggest investor and market for renewable energy

[–]WitchettyCunt 1 5
They can't build them as quickly as they need energy so they are supplementing new renewable generators with fossil fuels ones. The trend is heavily in favour of renewables so it's not even close to fair to say they aren't already going for renewables.

Chine have commited greatly to reduce emissions though

It's more the potential for further escalation, sentiment about the future rather than current reality.

It’s one port in China that did this right? Not all of China? The headline seems sensationalized.

So, assuming China is doing this as a "shot across the bow" in response to Huawei ban, this just shows exactly why we should be cautious of Chinese companies!
Any time China wants to send a warning and punish a country for some political thing they don't like (say recognising Taiwan as a country which it fucking clearly is) they get one of their footsoldier companies to stop buying some export from that country.
China does this all the time. Canada, Philippines, Indonesia.. some dispute comes up and China tells its companies not to buy some key export. Then China cries how "unfair" and "unjustified" it is to limit dealings with their companies. The hypocrisy is ridiculous.
So thanks China for showing that we are, in fact, correct to say fuck off to Huawei. Come back when your companies deal independently of your repressive, stone-age politics.

They could cause a lot of trouble, but Australia is a small enough fish that they probably wouldn’t do more than bluff in case it prompted anyone else to elect someone with enough sense to wean their economy off Chinese trade. So long as they can but cheap minerals in Australia and sell everything else Australia wants, they’re better off not having to spend money on Australia.

[–]anndnow 1 5
I think this is a positive in terms of environment. I'm not going into the political stuff behind the ban..

It's almost as if literally every investor saw this coming, and yet the Coalition still chose to give massive payouts to various coal companies

[–]apokalypsezz 1 5
as much hate US but china should be twice hated..can't be trusted especially come to trade, we need to bow down to them and listen to them? fuck that...

It’s funny the whole western world accuses China but they don’t counter accuse.

Haven't you already been doing all these?

[–]Mingablo 2 5
It takes 2 to deal, maybe you should try convincing people not to sell to China. Its a bit hard when no one else is buying.

I can't tell if you are being serious or sarcastic. It's sad almost pathetic if baby milk powder is the only thing Australia has as a bargaining chip.
And it's actually the other way around, chinese government is more likely to ban the milk powder if they want to teach Australia a lesson.
Also there are more than a million chinese in Australia, just because you heard/saw a few bad rotten apples buying out all the milk powder in the supermarket, it doesn't mean the entire country can't live without Australian milk powder. In fact, only poor people in china buy Australian milk powder. Rich chinese buy European or American milk powder.
