NEW DELHI: Even as connectivity becomes part of the strategic jostling by major powers in the region, the Modi government has red-flagged growing Chinese presence in India’s neighbourhood stressing the need for India to be more efficient in implementation of its own development projects in neighbouring countries.

In remarks to Parliament’s standing committee for external affairs recently, foreign secretary Vijay Gokhale said under Xi .., China is determined to “spread its presence abroad to protect its interests.” This is clear in the establishment of foreign military bases, as in Djibouti, as well as undertaking projects in almost all south Asian countries. While some countries are having second thoughts about China, that is cold comfort for India, and it was imperative that India should speed up its own delivery mechanism.

China’s rise, Gokhale said, “offers both opportunities and challenges” especially as China’s international posture becomes more confident and assertive. “Connectivity issues are animating much of strategic manoeuvring by major powers. While we are working on the Asia Africa Growth Corridor and the Chabahar port development, China has clearly stepped up its role through the China Pakistan Economic Corridor and the Belt and Road Initiative.” China is a serious player here, having been a “substantial net exporter of capital, technology and infrastructure” in the past few years.
