Living In Gaogang
Sometime ago Sureshji posted a blog expressing his desire to visit China in January 2017. Two, three years ago Dr. Arun Mehta, who used to blog here had expressed a similar desire too. Some other bloggers from time to time have expressed their keenness to see China after reading my blogs, but I have never seen tourists here. At least in Gaogang where I live, no tourists come to visit. There are only a few Indians around here. Two of them are working with me in the same project. One is our Site Manager, who is from Kerala and another is a paint supervisor from Nagpur. Besides this there is one Mr. Chopra has come a few months ago for a project at another shipyard.

After my blogs became popular with the Chinese, I started knitting big dreams of imitating Jack Ma’s success story or rewriting that of Binny Bansal of ‘Flip cart’ fame, or anyone from those brigades of youngsters who started out with nothing but a dream. Haha- I am not young but can’t the oldies have dreams? If you see a short video of Jack Ma where he relates of his repeated failures before taste of success, even the most doubtful entrepreneur would get encouraged to try, but perhaps I need a little more push. I haven’t given up on dreaming, of course I can’t because I am a passionate writer and dreaming is the very breath of my passion, but I think the businessmen are made of some different material. Well, well I am not going to reveal the details of my dream lest someone steals the idea but with my heart set on making it big, I did make a website three years ago.
Happy Neighbours.....Why can't we be?
It was supposed to be a window between India and China, perennially acrimonious, envious neighbours. It was to be a kind of window the Indian women use for exchanging information with their neighbours on important issues of gossip, rumour, romance and promiscuity and their constant pains in the neck, the maids and weird demands of their husbands. In India such a window is also used for exchanging small dishes for sampling the special cuisines made by the women for not only getting appreciations for their culinary skills but more importantly for conveying the message about expensive quality of food they routinely have and for stunning their neighbours they garnish them lavishly with dry fruit or add a dollop of “Desi Ghee” (Homemade clarified butter) and hope their acts would not only impress the neighbours but also burn them down to cinders in envy.
Chess or Chinese Checkers?? ( Picture from the Internet)
Haha, this line of thought of India and China being two such cheeky, jealous, conceited, home makers living in two adjoining apartments with a common window between them is going to get me brickbats from my female readers but the simile seems too appropriate to let go without extracting every bit of humour out of it, but living in China imposes some limitations on my flights of imagination though no one has frowned at me but it's better to be safe than sorry :)
Between India and China tourism is not an organized sector though there is a great potential for it. Among the many reason of there being not much exchange of tourists though both nations are among the top destinations for the tourists from all over the world, the major hurdles for the Indians are food and language. Not only the food habits of the Indians are very different from those of the Chinese but even what the Chinese eat is mostly off the menu of almost all Indians. Most of the Indians can’t even think what the Chinese can eat and the Chinese can't think what they can't. Even merely on hearing what Chinese eat, can eat, like to eat would make many queasy and cause them skip a few meals.
Great Tourist Attractions
Yesterday, someone forwarded to me a video clip of a Chinese woman eating live crawlers that looked like scorpions. She had them on skewers and she was demonstrating her dare but it was so repulsive that I couldn’t see it myself, forget about forwarding it to my fellow Indian friends I communicate with.
Not all Indians can eat this
Well, this is far extreme but most of the Indians are strictly vegetarian. Besides this they must have their morning tea or coffee, morning bath, Pooja (ritual of prayers) before starting on their day’s work routine.
A Chinese friend who is a heart surgeon told me that once in his hospital an Indian had to be admitted because of his serious heart condition. He was under strict observation, but early in the morning next day, he got up and started rapidly going around his room, chanting the prayers loudly. My friend was quickly summoned by the attending nurses and he told me that they were very scared because they thought that he had got some kind of a fit. He said that although he was very ill, he had with him a small statuette of Lord Ganpati and all the paraphernalia for his ritual of prayers. He told my friend when he inquired that he can go without food but not without his daily prayers.
Elaborate Puja Routines ( Picture from Internet)
Second problem is of language. I have been coming and going out of China since last eight years and have stayed here mostly during this period but till today, I don’t know even ten words of Chinese and they are useless anyway because when I speak any, no one understands it, because Chinese has very four tonal inflexions associated with every syllable and it is a contextual language. For example the word "tang" has four meanings-Soups, Sugar, to lie down and boiling hot, depending upon whether 'a' in the word is high and flat, rising from low to high, falling and rising or just falling short and strong. And it's not enough because there is another tone called neutral tone, but I can't teach you something that I haven't learnt in the first place. I have tried and given up many times, but so far haven’t given up for good. I don’t see any easy solutions to these. Although, some tourism companies are venturing in to this very lucrative market but I think they have to hunt a lot for getting the people.
Communication Problem ( Picture from Internet)
Even when I was toying with the idea of my website, many people were keen to come and who knows one day, I may succeed in making arrangements for catering to the needs of the Indian tourists and start a tourist service rivalling biggies like Thomas Cooks and cause them heart burns by giving it a similar sounding name like “Thomas Crook”.
This cartoon is from the internet
When I was living in Shanghai, I met any Indian, who during the initial conversation told me that he was from Delhi, was married to a Chinese woman and that he ran a restaurant and Indian provisions shop. He asked me to order stores from him. It was natural for me to ask the name of his shop and the restaurant. He smiled and said, “Chor Bazaar” I couldn’t help laughing and he laughed too. I told him, that I appreciated his sense of humor and presumed that, that was behind his selection of such an unusual name which might be just any other name for a Chinese or anyone else but an Indian will think twice before ordering things from a shop named “Chor Bazaar” (Chor bazaar is a market where the stolen stuff is sold by the thieves).
Well, let’s see if and ever if I setup a website and start a tourism business, but for now let me continue to enjoy my blogging.

Ashu- It is a pleasure to hear from you whenever you contact but why should I think of taking you as a cook? Why not as a Project Manager? Think Big!!

navneetSuresh Ji- I wish Sulekha becomes as vibrant as it was a few years ago. Then I won't have any problem of views and comments. The Chinese tell me that my popularity in China isn't waning and I am happy and contended.

My dear Navneet,
I visited China before liberalisation. I found China as dirty as India was and their habits as repugnant as some of ours. I found Shanghai no different from Calcutta including the unruly behavior of crowds. I had Peking duck the famous Chinese dish but the poshest restaurants had dirty wash rooms or rest rooms. I found Chinese communists as corrupt as our officials and perhaps even more. In fact, I found things were no different from several countries under communism. When I visited some villages, they were as primitive as our villages. Of course, the country has changed rapidly in the last twenty years.
navneet
GV sir, China's progress after liberalization is stupendous. That's what actually drew me to write about China after I came here. It can inspire any country that intends to take learn from China. Though, western media talks much about curbing of human rights and exploitation of labour but it's not any worse than it is in India but because of strict governmental control, the output is manifolds more than that in India
