China hits back at Trump’s tariffs by imposing a 25 per cent charge on 106 US imports worth $50BILLION including cars and aeroplanes - as markets quake and Trump insists 'we are not in a trade war'

China has raised tariffs on 50 billion dollars (£27 billion) of US goods including edamame soybeans, aircraft and cars in a tit-for-tat response to Washington's increased duties on Chinese goods.

China's commerce ministry listed 106 products that will be targeted by a 25 per cent tariff, and said a date for the implementation of the tariffs would be announced separately.

The announcement came just hours after US President Donald Trump's White House proposed 25 per cent tariffs on 50 billion dollars-worth of Chinese imports.

China's commerce ministry criticised the US move, describing it as a violation of global trade rules and said China was acting to protect its 'legitimate rights and interests'.

This expands the list of products subjected to a 25 per cent traffic announced on Monday, which mainly included variations of pork and scarp aluminum.

The dispute stems from US complaints that Beijing pressures foreign companies to hand over technology in return for market access.

The tariffs would hit an array of products, from cars to motorcycles, boats, microscopes, rifle sites, and home appliances.
