Three Australian warships were confronted by China's military while sailing through the South China Sea earlier this month, it has been revealed.

The vessels - HMAS Anzac, HMAS Success and HMAS Toowoomba - were en route to Vietnam when challenged by the People's Liberation Army Navy.

It is thought the encounter occurred during drills in the area said to be the largest naval exercise ever performed by the communist state.

One official, speaking to ABC on condition of anonymity, said the exchanges between the Chinese and Australians were polite but 'robust'.

China has been increasingly spreading its influence across the South China Sea, the majority of which it claims as its own territory.

It currently has the world's largest armed forces, and has seen further investment in technology, equipment such as stealth fighters and troop carriers, and also training programmes.

The Defence Department would not discuss the encounter, but confirmed the movements of the three ships.

A spokesperson added: 'The Australian Defence Force has maintained a robust program of international engagement with countries in and around the South China Sea for decades.

'This includes bilateral and multilateral military exercises, port visits, maritime surveillance operations and ship transits.

'As they have done for many decades, Australian vessels and aircraft will continue to exercise rights under international law to freedom of navigation and overflight, including in the South China Sea.'

Like the attempts at interventionism against Russia a century ago, Australia picks up the bourgeoisie stick of the supposed democratic capitalist nations and joins forces to poke a nation in the eye. I can almost smell a couple of gongs being manufactured in an attempt at justification by the toadies. From Korea, to Vietnam to Iraq, to Timor, to Afghanistan, the interventionist policy has proven to be nothing more than farcical. Grow up Oz and don't repeat the follies of yesteryear.

Let me make this clear; we have 2 choices: a) be told what to do by the US b) be told what to do by China I choose a; there are no other options.

Compared to the UK or USA then China is only a tiny investor in Australia, the problem is that most Chinese investment is politically strategic or designed for a quick return on property. The UK and USA investments are long term market based. But China is still not a large investor in Australia.

They need to be confronted. They will cave.

Well China, we could always stop buying your c-ra-p ...

We would be eating our dinner by candle light within a very short time if we did...

China does it to all naval ships, the response is we are in international waters and we have right of passage, then its just a back and forth repeat over communications and then China decides to be quiet. Happens all the time, dont stress.

This is why Australia needs its own nukes.

We could give you a few newfangled quark bombs for defense - when we develop them, which should be soon.

China and its delusions of grandeur. They are already the most hated and ridiculed country in Asia.

They are also the most heavily armed and the most likely to cause trouble. Don't blink.

A country doesn't build such a huge naval force and army for nothing! They have eyes on the larger picture down under for sure. Have felt that for years with all our iron ore going up there.

ecch1, Sydney, Australia, 5 hours ago

They don't need a navy to own Australia..they already own most of our realestate

China is itching to start a war and prove how tough they are. Australia needs to start reacting accordingly. China is not our friend and not our ally.

SeventhOne, Perth, Australia, 5 hours ago

No, I wouldn't have thought they are itching to start a war. Wrong country.

I've seen China's map of Australia, renamed NEW SOUTH CHINA.

Chins already owns Australia anyway

Bemused Bystander, Nice Place, Australia, 6 hours ago

They've certainly been buying the farm - and sending the food directly to China.

Yes!And just try getting a house in Sydney or even a seat in the train

Not sure how China claims it is theirs.. The other countries are nearer to the Spratly Islands than China so surely this would be their waters, same as any other country with a nautical boundary. China just pushing its boundaries trying to claim as much as they can without fighting for it. Isn't this what Germany and all other countries have done in the past. So easy to see what will happen if it isn't stopped.

Americans are doing a lot more than that. Look at Iraq.

It's all about China's desire for world domination.

Scotty Mac, Hong Kong, Hong Kong, 4 hours ago

Jack,. What load of crap. China will never do what the UK, France, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Japan and the US has done to many countries. Chian has learnt from this shocking experience and will never let it happen to them again. Unlike the UK and the EU masters you have now.
