'My culture is NOT your prom dress!' Twitter users accuse teen of insensitivity after she wore a Chinese 'qipao' dress to the big dance - but she insists she was showing 'appreciation'

A high school student has been accused of cultural appropriation after she wore a Chinese dress to her prom.

Utah native Keziah Daum, 18, took toTwitter last weekend to reveal a series of photos of herself and her friends at her high school prom.

In the photots, Keziah can be seen wearing a qipao — a traditional Chinese outfit dating back to the 17th century — which some social media users found offensive, and promptly told her so.

Keziah posed for many of the traditional shots in her qipao, standing with her date and friends.

But on one shot, she and her female friends can be seen posing with their hands clasped palm to palm, bowing, while their male friends behind them made inverted V signs with their fingers.

Some have taken the combination of Keziah's outfit and the bowing as offensive.

Twitter user Jeremy Lam appears to have been the first to comment after happening upon Keziah's post. He retweeted it with the caption, 'My culture is NOT your goddamn prom dress.'

The pictures quickly went viral, and others began to accuse the teen of cultural appropriation as well.

4BB54C5F00000578-5674661-image-a-10_1525103299038.jpg

Cultural appropriation is defined as the act of taking or using things from a culture that is not your own, especially without showing that you understand or respect this culture.

In a series of subsequent tweets, Jeremy went on to explain that the qipao was originally a loose dress or garment worn by Chinese women to clean the house or do domestic chores.

He added that it was then adopted by Asian women as a symbol of activism and fight against 'patriarchal oppression'.

Jeremy also suggested that the dress symbolizes 'the extreme barriers marginalized people' have overcome.

'For it to simply be subject to American consumerism and cater to a white audience, is parallel to colonial ideology,' he added.

This was a sentiment shared by @JeannieBeanie99, who wrote: 'This isn’t ok. I wouldn’t wear traditional Korean, Japanese or any other traditional dress and I’m Asian. I wouldn’t wear traditional Irish or Swedish or Greek dress either. There’s a lot of history behind these clothes. Sad.'

Another user, @bunchukuu, wrote: 'Just because it’s okay to a few chinese people doesn’t mean it’s okay to all of us? our traditional dress isn’t meant to be a fashion statement or make you appear more "exotic". there’s a long history behind the dress and white people are not a part of it.'

While many people agreed with Jeremy's argument, a vast number of people have chosen to ignore his theory, and have defended Keziah.

Keziah herself tweeted: 'To everyone causing so much negativity: I mean no disrespect to the Chinese culture. I’m simply showing my appreciation to their culture.'

'I’m not deleting my post because I’ve done nothing but show my love for the culture. It’s a f*cking dress. And it’s beautiful,' she added.

'To everyone who says I’m ignorant, I fully understand everyone’s concerns and views on my dress,' she went on. I mean no harm. I am in no way being discriminative [sic] or racist. I’m tired of all the backlash and hate when my only intent was to show my love.'

When someone asked her if she was part-Chinese, she responded: 'Nope! It’s just a pretty dress I found and it’s a vintage dress from a vintage shop!:)'.

And others backed up her decision to not remove the post.

Twitter user @judemercenary wrote: 'It’s just a dress. It’s a nice looking dress. A beautiful design. She’s showing respect, not defaming it.'

And @MissGinaDarling shared: 'I’m asian and I’m not insulted in any way. You look beautiful.'

She looks HOT in that dress! If you're offended, grow up. End of!

It's a free country and a free market economy, she looks awesome and has done nothing wong.

Media needs to stop. A half dozen people reacted negatively to this and now it's a big thing. Ridiculous.

She looks great. Great dress. My guess is the folks complaining on twitter are culturally appropriating using their western style computers on their western style internet on their western style Twitter while wearing western style jeans. No I wouldn't say that because that would be idiotic, just like their comments.

It's a beautiful dress and those claiming cultural appropriation are full of excrement.

We're all so good at pretending outrage at someone for attention, aren't we?

When I lived in Tokyo, I had an elderly woman friend who loved dressing me up in a kimono. I'm six feet tall so for her, it was just a fun thing to do. There was no harm in it at all.

So, does that mean that Asians cannot have Western style weddings and dress up in dresses that reflect Western culture? This is so ridiculous. Social media is the problem.

I wonder if these complainers would call out these big celebrities. It is a dress. She paid for the dress. She can wear the dress. She didn't disrespect the dress or the culture. Sit down, you are not getting 15 minutes of fame. But you will get called out for being stupid.

THaywood, Rocky Mtns, United States, 6 hours ago

it's a dress, not a culture, and while it might be considered customary in some cultures, it is still just a dress.

KatyGirl, WayDownSouth, United States, 6 hours ago

I think it was a compliment that she wanted to wear it.

I lived for 10 years in Hong Kong, Beijing and Taipei and I have never met anyone that would find it offensive for a non Chinese person to wear this dress - in fact, most people would be thrilled. American kids of ethnic decent need to 'check their privilege' - it is making them as ridiculous as their white counterparts.

I absolutely looove this style of dress but I am afraid to wear one because I don't want to offend.

You look very beautiful and that's in your country not America everything is sold here so why the sensitivity. It's a Prom and you made this beautiful girl feel bad in some way. Why aren't you offended during Halloween or at Movie stars parties

Chinese here... I have no issues with her wearing the dress. I mean would that mean we can't wear US fashion? They aren't making much sense.

Why do people think that clothing can only be worn by people from the country in which the clothing was invented? Could anything be sillier? This is the world the liberals have created. How you liking it America?!?!

Jeremy Lam does not own Asian culture or represent all Asians. Many Asians would feel honored she wore that dress.

Beyond silly. Does this mean non-western people can't wear the fashions of Paris? After all that's our culture and it is a culture separate from theirs. This is nonsense.

I can't stand this cultural appropriation nonsense. She liked this dress so she wore it to her prom. Enough already. It's a dress. Bigger things in this world to worry about than what this girl wore to her prom.

These dresses were actually on trend and in fashion back in the 90's particularly in the UK there was no issue then. Why do some people get offended by EVERYTHING these days. Its ridiculous. Get a grip and a life!

Okay, so Asians cannot wear tartan, or jeans, or traditional western clothing? Unless it¿s a religious garment it¿s just an outfit
