India is not incapable of producing electronic gadgets... We have had many big players like Onida and BPL. However, the advent of foreign brands such as Samsung, Nokia and LG knocked them out of the competition.

The main difference between these companies and Indian companies?? They could manage to make huge investments in R&D and reduce the manufacturing costs of the products. I know this sounds crazy but let me give an example of how far they go to promote their products. This is a recent campaign launched by Samsung for their Galaxy range (galaxy s5 and the gear)

However, things have been changing lately, thanks to the advent of Indian companies such as Micromax and Xolo! They are following a similar strategy, making even cheaper products and roping in famous ambassadors and are on their way to become global brands.

India imports most of the electronic components and they are only assembled here. So the production cost accrued is high. If India is to produce electronic products such as laptops,mobiles on its own,It should have indigenous semiconductor industries instead of importing the chips and materials at high cost,as it is done now. So for this to happen, a conducive environment should be created to incentivize companies to invest here,but this is yet to happen. Apart from this there are many other challenges.However India Inc. is pressing our government on promoting the semiconductor industries in India.
