All good answers which cover of lot of valid subjects. I would however like to counter (in a way) Balaji's  observation about India's poor: "If you are going to be born as a poor villager, then India is likely worse than Vietnam, Iran and China."

I do agree with Balaji Viswanathan 's point about access to sanitation, health care, etc for poor vs the rich in India. However there are two other important factors that make India a better choice if you have to be born in a poor family:

1. Awareness of education:

Some how, over the past 60 or so years, majority of the Indian population (especially the lower middle class and the poor population) has convinced itself that education is the tool (and the only tool) for their upliftment. And they have rightly done so.

2. Solid family institution

One thing I want to add to Luke's good answer is that it also depends on which class & locality you are born in. If you are going to be born as a poor villager, then India is likely worse than Vietnam, Iran and China. India's healthcare, sanitation and primary education is terrible if you are poor.

If you are going to be born in a rich, urban family India is the best place to be in. Ultra rich often face trouble from the party in China and face slightly more security issues in Vietnam. A rich Indian can have an outsized power in the society, have access to great education & healthcare and can also greatly utilize India's fast growing economy. Politicians, media, army and the civil society will not come in the way of a rich person.

If you are going to be in the urban middle class, it is a tie between China and India. Middle class Chinese have a variety of advantages - such as far better roads, airports, trains & uninterrupted power, while a middle class Indian has better political power, the benefit of English & better relations with the west to travel the world more. A simple example is that, for an Indian it is fairly easy to get a 10 year multiple entry visitor visa in US, while until recently Chinese were limited to 6 months at a time [due to reciprocal arrangements].  Middle class Indians and Chinese are thus roughly comparable in the range of benefits they can get from the society.

Edit: There seems to be some confusion in the comment thread on what Middle Class means. Middle Class in Indian standards refers to about $600/month [10 times less than in the west] and that translates to about Rs. 40,000/month. Only a small fraction of India is in middle or upper middle. Everyone in India thinks they are 'middle class' and almost no one actually is

The only nations I would NOT want to be born in (of the ones you listed) is Iraq and Iran. Iraq since it is collapsing under sectarian violence and war and Iran because, I do not trust the government. I think back to its oppression in 2009.

I'd say india would be worse than China's entrepreneur opportunities as they are increasing, while much of india is extremely poverty stricken. Though, that's just if you're looking at it for the money. Yet again, I do not trust China's government.

Also, true India is densely populated and ridden with poverty but larger the population larger is the market and more opportunities to develop. India can progress lot faster if administration is good.

When i was young, if i would deny to eat anything or go anywhere for some flimsy reasons, my granny used to say, all have been eating this for years n nothing happened to them, so i think there is no harm in eating this. Now if i think back, this is such a philisophically loaded sentence n the crux of whole universe in few words. Likewise if two third of the world population is staying in all the countries mentioned above, then there must be something which is holding these people back  n thats why not all of them are migrating to west.

It will mostly depend on who you are

If you are Rural Poor then Iran and China are the best, the Iranians have a little better agriculture but China has Geographic advantage.

If you are Rural rich (real rich) then in Iraq you hold a lot of power, though the Iranians have better facilities like healthcare and education, the This looks like a tie.

If you are Urban Poor then hands down, China provides the best opportunities for employment, though India and Vietnam are not far.

If you are Middle Class then India with better Education, Healthcare, Entertainment(yay Bollywood) and Political freedom matches with the Chinese with better Infrastructure,Employment and almost matching Healthcare industry. Vietnam is closing too.

For the rich and influencial India is better than China, India being Capitalist. In Iraq you will be influencial but the high crime rate and constant terrorist threat makes it a big no.

For women China and Vietnam win

The worst overall would easily be Iraq.

I am sure there are enough people in the west whose lives are bigger struggle than many people in all the countries you have stated.

There are enough people born to rich parents in developed countries.... and they are struggling in their life.

Personally I feel that the parents one is born to, are more important than the country one is born in. I am sure there are enough parents in Iraq and all other countries who have supported their kids to grow up and have happy life.

I was born to very simple parents. My father lost his mother when he was 12 years old, my grandfather was perpetually on bed. My father worked first to feed and educate his siblings and then to educate us.  I feel I am so lucky to be born to such parents in India.
