I am a foreigner to India. I didn’t know what to expect before going. What myself and my girlfriend did, was booked a ticket to Bangkok, then to Chennai. No other plans, timelines or expectations.

We didn’t like India at first. We had a difficult time understanding how to do seemingly simple things like getting a SIM card, booking a train, or knowing what to order in a restaurant. The Indian people however were extremely helpful and we finally figured it all out.

I will post some pictures of my favorite things and places in India, but first let me help you understand a little about India and how I see it. It’s a place of extreme acceptance. I have never been anywhere in the world quite like India in this regard. People are just simply accepted. There is a difference between acceptance and tolerance. Most places I have been in the world, people are tolerant of tourist, religions, differences and color of your skin. India is accepting. It is truly the most endearing thing about this country in my eyes.

我对印度来说是个外国人。我在去印度之前不知道会发生什么。我和我女朋友订了去曼谷的机票，然后又去了钦奈。没有其他计划、时刻表，也不抱任何期望。

起初我们并不喜欢印度。一些看似简单的事情，比如购买SIM卡、预订火车票，或者在餐馆该点什么，对我们来说都很困难。但是印度人非常乐于助人，我们最终解决了所有问题。

Being a citizen of the USA, I thought that “America” was a melting pot. It’s more like a melting dish compared to India. India is massively diverse and yet live in harmony with each other in a way I haven’t been able to find in many places in the world. The days of the caste system are over and the people of India have once again assimilated to their surroundings.

The Indian people have assimilated for centuries of occupations that has helped to create this acceptance. From the Muslim invaders to the British most recently, this country has not lost her identity over thousands of years, yet assimilates parts of the occupiers seamlessly. This is admirable and says a lot about the Indian people.

So Lets get to the things/ places I like most about India in no particular order!

1.The Food! Come on! The food is a balance between spicy and sweet that simply makes me happy. There is little better feeling then the curries that tickle my lips with almost a buzz after eating Indian Food. From the biryani to the curries, from pani puri (sp) to the Chole Bhature and Kati Rolls of Delhi. By no means am I a vegetarian, however this is the only country where I could eat veg and not care one bit. Amritsar has some of the best and eating at the famous Kesar de Dhaba was a treat. 2.The people! Extremely accommodating and curious. There were many times in some of the religious pilgrimage places such as Pushkar and Varanasi where complete strangers would come up to us and ask to take a picture. More so with me because many thought I was a professional wrestler in the WWE. But many times it was just a way to talk to us and get to know us.

3.Dharamshala/ Mcleod Ganj. India has balls. They openly defy China by housing the Dalai Llama and have been a safe haven for the Tibetans who currently live in India as refugees. It’s an amazing place that doesn’t have the same India feeling the rest of the country had for us. This is one of the most interesting things about India, is the diversity of areas and cultures within it. McLeod Ganj is absolutely beautiful too perched in the Himalayan Mountains. I could have stayed there for a very long time.

3.达兰萨拉/麦克劳德根杰。印度很有种。他们公然蔑视中国，为达赖喇嘛提供住所，并一直是目前居住在印度的西藏难民的避难所。这是一个神奇的地方。印度最有趣的事情之一，就是其地区和文化的多样性。麦克劳德根杰绝对是喜马拉雅山脉中美丽的存在。我甘愿在那里逗留很长时间。

 

4.The Festivals. No one knows how to party like the Indians. They celebrate! Not only do they partake in the festivities, they live it. We spent Holi In Vrindavan and it was absolutely insane! It’s crazy that you can be somewhere where people have their hands all over you, throwing powder in your face, with millions of people shoulder to shoulder all smiling, laughing and having a good time doing it all. This was a foreign thing to me, but for some reason I felt safe and in some regards I felt Indian. Which is part of the reason for Holi. To paint everyone so we are all the same. It was a uniquely beautiful experience we will never forget!

5.Udaipur is an amazing place to visit in India. The beauty of this city with it’s Havelis , cafes, palaces and cenotaphs made this place one of our very favorite places in India and quite possibly the world. Udaipur and the lakes were one of the most amazing places to simply sit and marvel. Some of the most gorgeous sunsets I have ever seen too in the desert! You know you are in a foreign land being here, however it feels… just right! Udaipur is a must see in India.

Mobile connection and roaming

After landing in Delhi, first of all I bought Indian sim-card of Airtel, just inside the airport. I had paid 1 200 rupees and afterwards used this sim all-over India with free roaming for whole month. This is very handy and also cheap.

In Russia, our mobile operators love to loot us during roaming. It is extremely expensive, if you just step out of your home city. I went from Saint-Petersburg to Moscow for 1 day, made 2–3 calls just for few minute speaking. My account lost 500 rupees. Mobile operators charge us even for income calls in roaming. Situation is changing now, but you are 1 step ahead in this.

ID card

One Indian showed me how your Aadhar card works. I understood that it is a card that every Indian has. Even if you don’t have it with you, police will identify you by fingerprint, connected to your account.

We are still using stupid paper ID’s in Russia and police usually spend time to identify who are their guests, if they don’t have an ID with them.

Entrepreneurs

Once having lunch in Varanasi restaurant, always full of customers and located on the Ganges river bank. I said a compliment to the waiter, who was 36 years old man. Restaurant service was very quick and of high standards. He was pleased and asked to repeat it to his boss. I was expecting to see some mature tough guy of 40–50 years old. But his boss was a guy of nearly 23–26 years old.

Also, in Varanasi, my guide, who also runs his own tourism company in Varanasi and 26 years old himself, introduced me to his friends. One of them ran his own business of selling woods to crematoriums, was 24 years old young man.

I’ve seen that many times more in other cities. It seems that Indian young men are progressive minded people. These guys are to come in next 2 decades to rule the country,so I’m sure your country is in right hands.

When I first traveled to India in 2011, I was mesmerized by the beauty of the holy Dham Vrindavan and I must say pretty scared of the capital Delhi. I traveled alone to my Guru’s Ashram in Vrindavan and since it was the first time, I was believing stories of other foreigners who had visited India before me - and they weren’t really nice, especially comments about the people.

I came again, this time to Pondicherry, and was very scared of the traffic. So much, that the sight of a bus was enough to frighten me. Until this time I was pretty convinced Indians suck and don’t value the luck of being born in this sacred country.

But then I met this guy and we had a trip to Mussoorie - that changed my mind about India altogether. I experienced the beauty of mother nature, the cold of a winter day without heating, the warmth of homemade Aloo Paratha with a cup of fresh Chai. And at last, I came to know that Indians are very different from what we are told at home.

I simply couldn’t bear leaving this paradise and return home to the cold Austria. So what I did next was difficult to understand for most. Still many don’t understand how I can be happier in this so defined third world country while I couldn’t be back home.

Honestly, I've been dreaming since childhood to live in India, but never really believed that was possible or even feasible. But at this point, I knew what had to be done.

I left everything behind to make myself and my daughter a happy life here in India. We’ve traveled many places since, like Manali, Shimla, Kasauli, Khirsu, Lansdowne, Nainital, Bhimtal, even some old monastery in the middle of Himachal, and a long tour through Rajasthan to Jodhpur, Mount Abu, Udaipur.

我简直无法忍受离开这个天堂，回到寒冷的奥地利的痛苦。所以接下来我所做的事对大多数人来说是很难理解的。许多人仍然不明白，当我呆在这样一个明摆着的第三世界国家，不能回家时，我会有多快乐。

So what do I like about India, after living here for over 4 years?

I like the warmth in people’s hearts, even the ones who are trying to rip you off are doing it with such sweetness, one can hardly resist.

While I hated the traffic some years ago, I now race my car through trucks and buses as if I was born racing (and trust me, I was afraid of driving my entire life, I learned it only 2 years ago on Indian roads).

And who doesn’t love to fill their bellies with yummy momos in just 40 Rupees? (I won’t say life in India is cheap as many others may say, coz for someone living and earning here it’s darn expensive)

I love the colorful clothes traditional aunties still wear, though I despise those who are trying very hard to westernize themselves and dress their small girls in sexy mini dresses and heels.

在印度生活了4年多后，我喜欢印度的什么呢?

我喜欢人们心中的温暖，即使是那些想欺骗你的人，行事也很甜，让人难以抗拒。

虽然几年前我讨厌这里的交通，但现在我开着我的车在卡车和公共汽车之间疾驰，就好像我生来就是赛车运动员一样(相信我，我这辈子都害怕开车，我是在两年前才在印度的公路上学会开车的)。

我喜欢老阿姨们身上五颜六色的衣服，不过我鄙视那些努力西化自己，让自己的小女儿穿上性感迷你裙和高跟鞋的人。

 

I love Diwali and Holi, though I can’t stand the ear blowing bass shaking the society at every festival.

I love the values taught to my daughter in school, though I can’t still make up my mind with this strict school system we have here.

I love the weather (I live in a desert you can say, so really, I mean the weather in hill stations

What I have learned from living here is that there are too many misconceptions about India and Indians told abroad.

India is a land of diversity, a place where a muslim and a hindu live next door in a society and have no issues whatsoever. A place where children are taught to respect all religions and celebrate their main holidays. Yes, my daughter loves Eid and Christmas, though we are Hindus.

我喜欢排灯节和胡里节，虽然我对每个节日都有震耳欲聋的男低音也不能忍。

我爱我女儿在学校里学到的价值观，虽然我仍然无法认同这里严格的学校制度。

我喜欢这里的天气(你可以说我住在沙漠里，所以说真的，我指的是山上的天气)

我在这里学到的是，我们在国外听到过太多关于印度和印度人的错误说法。

印度是一个多元化的国家，和印度教徒在同一个社会中共处，没有任何问题。在这里，孩子们被教导要尊重所有的宗教并庆祝他们的主要节日。没错，尽管我们是印度教徒，但我女儿喜欢开斋节和圣诞节。

 

India is a land not only of cultural diversity but also of food, as many very well mentioned. Though I had a hard time adapting to the spicy food, I now get along quite well with anything because, in this heat you simply can’t digest without some extra fire ;)

Finally, India is a large country with 1.5 billion people. Sure you find those of whom you hear in news, those few out of many who do very bad things (that also happen not far from my house), but which country doesn’t have the same?

We have people from all kind of backgrounds trying to keep up with the fast pace of development and they NEVER GIVE UP, no matter if they are rich or living in a tent made of plastic bags. Those children playing in the slum behind the society still have smiles on their faces, happy to have what they do.

In short, what I love about India and the Indians is the positive attitude towards everything. Maybe too much positive, that is why they are misunderstood by many.

I remember being disturbed by blunt gazes from Indian males in my first time here, I felt like an alien.

But after living here since over 4 years and speaking Hindi fluently, I realize it wasn’t their fault. Now people who don’t know me are simply so happy to hear me speak their tongue, they have to point it out. They feel proud as they should.

And those annoying gazes are gone, because I changed my attitude.

So what do I like about India?

That’s a difficult question, I could go on and on and I’d never go out of incredibly amazing positive things to say. So I’ll keep it short and say, I love India, I love everything about it and I’d not leave it unless I really must.

And what do I dislike? Nothing, really, I mean the things to dislike are nothing particular to this country, you’ll find them anywhere you go. So I choose to ignore dislikes and focus on the greatness of this wonderful country and its people Jai Hind

The variation, the warmth, the beauty (natural), the colour and the endearing expressions!

I’ll start with the expressions: Indian people do a kind of head wobble (incredibly endearing) this is neither a definite yes or no, and this confuses a lot of travelers. The head wobble is generally a yes, but it can also mean, ‘maybe’, or even ‘I don’t know’. Indian people will not usually give a definite ‘no’ as an answer and will either say, ‘yes’ and walk away, or they will give you the head wobble. They do this out of politeness.

I love the expressions they use - India is so linguistically varied at least the gesture is the same!

多样化，温暖，美景(大自然)，颜色和可爱的表情!

I also love the variety. I had heard that India had many dialects and the country was very linguistically varied, that people in the North could not understand the people in the South . I never really understood this concept entirely until today traveling in the State of Karnataka from Goa to Badami only a few hours by car and the language changed completely.

The colour- Oh Holi is like nothing on earth… no country is as vibrant and colourful as India.

The natural beauty- India has such variety in landscapes. Lush green valleys, snow-capped mountains , emerald green lakes and beautiful beaches. There is everything in India and many do not experience it all! India offers all the natural beauty of 20 x counties
