Beijing is political and seat of the power. ( Equivalent to Washington, U.S.A.) or (Equivalent to Ottawa, Canada)

Extremely long and glorious history with Tia*nmen Square, The Forbidden City, Temple of Heaven, The Great Wall of China and The Summer Palace. Breath taking Museums and Zoo.

北京是首都，是权力中心，相当于美国的华盛顿，相当于加拿大的渥太华。

北京有天安门、紫禁城、天坛、长城、颐和园，博物馆和动物园

All Government offices, Embassies and the main stop for foreign dignitaries.

Silk factory and Jade emporium,

Older but very majestic city.

Stunning, ultra modern, State of the art infrastructure, Totally unbelievable excellent public transportation system and endless subway lines. The beauty of the city is worth seeing in the evening when the lights are on and the Pearl tower dazzling in the Bund like a necklace. You name anything in the world, if you could afford it, Shanghai has it.

Bullet trains are circling the city as if some kid is playing with the toy trains.

I found Shanghai to be extremely clean, however, Beijing is not far behind and has its glory, but it appears to me Beijing is loaded with old money and Shanghai with new funds.

I vowed one day I would visit China; it took almost 60 years to realize that dream. I made several visits, and now I understand one life is not enough to even glimpse this great culture/wisdom/I am in total awe of this race and nation.

当时我就发誓，总有一天要去中国走走。这一等就是60年，我终于实现了梦想。我去了几座中国城市。

我发现，一辈子都不足以去了解这一伟大的文化，我无比敬畏这一民族和国家。

In my opinion,Beijing is political center and Shanghai is economic center.And both of this two city have different advantage

I have recently returned from China and the two cities have very different appeals. On the surface Shanghai seems more Western but away from the hutongs Beijing has some cutting edge restaurants and bars too. However, Beijing does have more historical points of interests.

People here say that "Shanghai" is modern, but once you leave the area around their beautiful skyline you quickly get to the older way of living; live chickens in the street, small stores in stalls, etc.

Depending on your definition of culture, both Beijing and Shanghai thrive. Shanghai is certainly more polished, cosmopolitan and has a city-feel to it. Beijing is more disorganized, organic, thriving and less cosmopolitan.

It's hard to say one is the better than the other. Both offer fantastic opportunities for entrepreneurship, culture, lifestyle, etc.
