Navy veteran’s mother denied visa to attend his funeral

He proudly served his country, but when it came time to bury him, a Navy veteran's father said the government wouldn't grant his son's mother a visa to attend his funeral.

Ngoc Truong, a four-year Navy veteran, died of leukemia Dec. 17 at the age of 22.

Truong's father, who owns a jewelry store in Blytheville, said Truong's Vietnam-born mother applied for a visa twice but was denied both times.

She ended up missing the funeral.

"That's what made me fuming mad. Fuming. Why?" Truong said.

After leaving the Navy in October, Truong's son had planned to study graphic design at a school in Florida.

Instead, he died suddenly after doctors diagnosed him.

He took words from one of his favorite presidents with him to his grave.

"Don't ask what your country did for you, but ask what you did for your country," Truong said.

But Truong now turns those same words on their head to explain his frustration with the way in which his ex-wife's visa requests were handled.

"He's already done for this country, but what has this country done for him? What did this country do for him?" Truong asked.

Truong said he doesn't know why the visa requests were denied, and the State Department isn't shedding any light on it.

"Visa records are confidential under U.S. law. We are unable to discuss specific visa cases," a State Department official emailed WREG.

Why would you join the military of a country that committed war crimes in the country of your parents? I'm not going to call him a Chan only by pure decency but really? How can you be proud to be Vietnamese and at the same time, work for your oppressors?

South Vietnamese and south Vietnamese sympathizers don't have the same feelings of hatred towards America. That said, I enlisted under maybe a naiive notion that my country didn't hate me and that I would be more American for doing so. Little did I know people simply don't believe you did time in. Honestly, the military is not as racist as real society is. There are major exceptions, but everyone shits on everyone and develops a common understanding that you're all in the shit.

Let me give you 2 good reasons.
The military provides a lot of practical benefits that can help poorer Asian folks make a better life for themselves. The GI bill, for example, pays for college, something not everyone can afford. THe military potentially provides a paycheck for someone living in the middle of nowhere and who has only a high school education. This can be used to help bootstrap the rest of their life. The military provides limited medical insurance, again, something that is valuable for Asian folks who cannot rely on their parent's insurance. The list goes on.
Being a military veteran provides additional benefits as well. Certain government jobs have preference for hiring vets. Veterns who own businesses can also benefit from certain government contracts that provide preference for vet-owned businesses. If you want to run for political office one day, having some sort of military service is a plus. These are all valuable opportunities that are available after you leave the service.
As a side note, the military have a lot of different occupations. Being a mechanic, or a medic, or a cook, teach you valuable skills that can be easily translated into civilian life.
The bottom line is that not all Asians live in the suburbs with parents that can afford to pay for SAT prep courses and college tuition. For young Asian-Americans who do not come from these privileged backgrounds, joining the military is a mechanism for getting ahead in life.

What it will be like for our entire diaspora, if the future battlefield will be the entire Far East Asia once again. Will they do to us, that they did to the Japanese in the past....?
Would westernised Asians fight against those from the homelands?

i think i read somewhere the number of Asian Americans joining the military have dropped significantly. i think it is because of all the negative stories concerning how Asian Americans are treated by their superiors and their so called "comrades". however any Asian American dude who actually perseveres through their duties in the military where they are not actually wanted and come out sane and stronger mentally much respect to them.
