As Donald Trump walked off the stage in the Rose Garden after announcing the US would withdraw from the Paris climate agreement one could practically hear the champagne corks popping in Beijing.
Chinese leaders are eager for more influence on the international stage and Trump’s move opened up another opportunity for China to fill a void left by the US.
“China is taking a very internationalist stance so taking the leadership on climate fits in well to that and they will be able to dramatically expand clean energy investment and markets overseas” said Kate Gordon a senior advisor at the Paulson Institute focusing on climate change. “That’s all opposed to a very nationalist stance from the United States.”

China is grappling with clouds of toxic smog that frequently blanket the country’s cities. In an effort to clean up the air and reduce emissions the government plans to spend 2.5tn yuan (£280bn) on renewables by 2020 an investment that is projected to create 13m jobs in China.
While China is taking aggressive actions it remains the world’s largest emitter of greenhouse gases about double the US. Although in terms of carbon emissions per person China produces less than half compared to the US.

The importance of something is often not realized or appreciated until it's gone which may be the lesson learned if U.S. assistance is withdrawn. When assistance from China is experienced that assistance from the U.S. wasn't as bad as critics claimed may well be obvious and appreciated. Stepping back and making way for China to take world leadership and responsibility could prove the best move Trump will ever make. Tricky Dick brought China on to the world stage. Dumb Don may make China's leaders realize that you should be careful about what you wish for and inadvertently improve our country's stature around the world.

And in the process they will drive the rhino and tiger to extinction and overfish the oceans. What a wonderful country. How environmentally responsible. Not.

Is this a joke? Under the accord China can continue to increase emissions for another 15 years.

China has more wind capacity than any European country and 2/3 as much as all of Europe combined Equally significantly they have the worlds fastest rate of EV adoption have built 20 new nuclear plants and are building 20 more. They also have the worlds highest penetration of solar hot water systems. And the place is run by engineers not lawyers so there really isn't much science/reality-denial. The Chinese leadership know what a low-carbon future looks like and are making significant efforts to get there. They are doing a better job than the much-lauded Germans at the moment.

Emissions is largely a per-capita thing although there is also a per-country overhead element which is why very small nations usually have very high per-capita footprints. Per capita is the best way to work out if a country is 'doing its fair share' with some allowance for the 'tiny country' issue. So Quatar Trinidad and Tobago Kuwait Bahrain Brunei UAE Luxembourg and Saudi Arabia are all worse than the US. Australia is the same as the US. (2013 numbers http://data.worldbank.org/indicator/EN.ATM.CO2E.PC/?year_high_desc=false) The US has both a large population _and_ high per capita emissions which is why it's so important at around 20% of world anthropogenic emissions排放大体上是一个人均的事情,尽管也存在按国家计算的总量因素。

Chinese birthrate is exactly the same as the UK: 1.56 babies per woman. (See http://gapminder.org for data). That's well below replacement rate (2.1) so the population is set to decline over time. China fixed its population growth issue a long time ago. (http://gapminder.org for data).

Scientists tend to be inhumane when dealing with their subject of study. Governments should act on what scientitific research tells them. It is the policy makers who must do the balancing act. Exactly. That is what the Paris agreement was about. There are also a lot of crooked scientists out there from the inventor of "scientific communism" to Lysenko to Mengele. Yeah Dr. Mengele will see you now...... That doesn't prove that thousands of scientists from scores of countries with research spanning decades aren't trustworthy.

We could of course use fission reactors hydrolyse water and get rid of a lot of petroleum products used in transportation but the anti nuclear arts grads would never let us do that.
My comment about the press is that reporting seems to becoming less obxtive and more biased. Thus the majority of the press being fed up that the democrats did not gain office in the US will not give up and report rationally.
Similarly the right wing press will inaccurately report things in their own way re the French election etc.
violagirl

Ok pretty sick of talking to brick walls. I'm pretty sure everyone thinks the same about talking to you. This has nothing to do with combating climate change. So why did virtually every government of every political persuasion sign up to this agreement? Try to give a sensible reply without getting into conspiracy territory.

Fusion and the hydrogen economy are the answer but no one wants to talk about it. Millions is being spent on fusion research and it is often discussed. To the best of my knowledge there is no guarantee that there will ever be a breakthrough that will lead to commercial use. I'm not sure what any of it has to do with the "liberal press".(可控)核聚变和氢经济就是答案,但是没人想去说。

No but it will be a changed relationship and perhaps not built on the same level of trust as previously enjoyed but hopeful trump is a brief and passing phase. He must not be allowed to further divide Europe as the uk are doing or have a negative influence on European values and culture. Seems under May there is already a further natural drift of northern hemisphere Anglo Saxons to all stick together. As for China England is already looking to them to build trade relations which will quite naturally extend into cultural and other areas as more come to work or establish themselves in the Uk.

There's 33 g of deuterium in every ton of water and the energy that would be released from fusing just one gram of deuterium is a mind-boggling 100 000 kWh. Nuclear fusion is the Holy Grail of energy technology...
That been said if achieved all those Big Oil dudes who contribute millions to the GOP campaign will be out of business. So they have zero - even less than zero - interest to promote such technologies.
Lindisfarn
If we really really want to rid ourselves of the use of fossil fuels we should maximize research into fusion.
But we won't do that.
The liberal press will complain but the average joe will go the cheapest route.
Thus areas of the world will flood and millions will move.
Fusion and the hydrogen economy are the answer but no one wants to talk about it.
