French parents will go on trial accused of causing the death of their 13-month-old baby by allegedly lacing her bottle with antidepressants and tranquilisers.

It is thought Delphine Niepceron 27 and Cyrille Le Got 43 drugged their child in an attempt to stop her crying.

They initially said the child named only as Maëlyne slipped into a coma having drank a glass of rose wine. But their version of events unraveled when the authorities began to question them.

The parents appeared 'cool' and collected according to doctors after telling them the glass of wine left by guests at their house in Champagne on February 27 2015 was to blame for their daughter losing consciousness. But their story was torn apart by experts who pointed out the baby could not even walk let alone hold and drink from a wine glass.

Doctors analysed the baby's blood and discovered toxic levels of drugs usually prescribed for people suffering depression. Investigators found traces of the same drugs on the baby's bottle and moved to indict the parents according to La Parisien and the sentence could carry a 20-year sentence.

Sad. Get a babysitter. Ask for help. Some infants seem to barely sleep and cry non stop. It can be very hard. Drugging them is obviously not the answer. Ask for help.

Who in their right mind would give drugs to shut their kid up? We've all been there and it can get extremely frustrating but that is what parenting is about. Take the good with the bad. If it gets bad enough that you feel like you can't handle it anymore remove yourself from the situation no matter what you need to do. Cool off and then give it another shot. It's certainly not an easy job but the pay back is huge when your kids grow up into fine young people.
